Despite the JRPG genre being known for heavy amounts of dialogue, the 1995 classic Chrono Trigger takes a noticeably more minimalistic approach. Those more accustomed to usual JRPG fare may be confused as to why people revere its characters so much, but this style of writing means that character actions and dialogue can hold a greater density of importance. This is especially true for how it portrays the identities of its characters, and how that relates to its central ideas.
The Power of a Name
One aspect of Chrono Trigger is that the majority of its party members use pseudonyms. Marle avoids the royal heritage of her real name, Nadia, Frog casts away the name of Glenn, Robo never has a chance to go by R-66Y, and Magus’s birth name of Janus is a long-forgotten memory. An interesting aspect is how the game treats these pseudonyms as more legitimate than their original names. In Marle’s case, her’s appears to be just a disguise so that no one finds out she is the princess, but even after this motivation loses its relevancy she still insists on being called Marle and the game’s UI never changes to her original name.
Names are depicted as being more than a convenience; they exist as an identity and represent what a character wants to be. All Robo had was a serial number before the player gave him a name, but the name “Robo” represents more than something easy to call him. With this name comes liberation from the other robots of his line that wish to kill humans. While he may not have a choice in being able to harm humans thanks to Lucca’s tinkering, it is ultimately his decision to help them save the world. Robo was created with a specific purpose, but having a distinct identity allows him the freedom to choose his fate.
The Existential Crises of Chrono Trigger
Lucca never goes by a pseudonym throughout Chrono Trigger, but she does struggle with her identity. It is central to Lucca’s character that she is a scientist and inventor. Her ability to work with machines is unmatched and she is extremely proud of it. In the side quest centering around her, she finds herself at a particular moment in the past in which her mother lost her legs in an accident with her father’s machine. If the player acts quickly, Lucca can save her mother. However, the entire reason Lucca became interested in machines was because of her mother’s accident, for she wanted to prevent such accidents from occurring in the future.
If Lucca does not save her mother, nothing changes- She remains interested in science for the same reason she always did. If she saves her mother, however, diary pages appear indicating a difference in mentality. She still wishes to become a scientist to prevent accidents like this from happening, but does so out of fear of her father’s inventions harming people. Her attitude towards her father is more negative, wishing that she wouldn’t have to take on his choice of career. By saving her mother’s legs, Lucca loses a part of herself, and her identity fundamentally changes. Which choice is right is up to the player to decide.
Chrono Trigger’s Lasting Legacy
The above examples are only a few instances of how the theme of identity is integral to Chrono Trigger’s entire ethos. Chrono Trigger is a game about using one’s willpower to create a better future, and that extends to individual characters. Characters will change themselves as they see fit, and pick new names to represent that. It even raises philosophical questions about the nature of a person’s existence. These are just a few reasons why Chrono Trigger remains a masterpiece in the JRPG genre.
