It’s finally official. Production for the still-to-be-named The Witcher 4 is now in full swing. The game is set to begin a new saga in the series’ story. Fans of the books and games are already chomping at the bit to know more about this exciting sequel. With all the mystery that surrounds the game so far, CD Projekt Red has graced us with bits of information in the past. Here’s the official announcement as well as everything we know so far about The Witcher 4.

The Announcement

CD Projekt Red made the stunning announcement on November 26. It was a simple photo that read, “Project Polaris has entered production phase.” For those not in the know, Project Polaris is the codename for The Witcher 4. To reinforce the good news, game director Sebastian Kalemba announced how excited he is about the game finally reaching full production. He stated, “With new challenges just around the corner, it’s the talented and hard-working people who make me believe we can together make the upcoming Witcher Saga a remarkable experience.”

Just like the teasers we’ve gotten for the game and Kalemba has stated, The Witcher 4 is the start of a new saga. For diehard fans of Geralt of Rivia, they might be a bit saddened by the latest entry. In an interview with Fall Damage, Doug Cockle, the voice actor for Geralt, confirmed that his character will not be the main focus of the name. However, this doesn’t mean he’ll be gone from the game. Cockle confirmed that we’ll still be seeing Geralt even if it’s not as much as players are used to. He also said that he doesn’t even know who The Witcher 4 will be focusing on, so the main character will remain a mystery for now.

On the more tech side of things, The Witcher 4 will not be developed using REDEngine. Instead, Unreal Engine 5 will be used for the game. According to the official site for The Witcher, this is the start of a “multi-year strategic partnership with Epic Games.” The primary goal of this partnership is stated to be all about tailoring Unreal Engine 5 for open-world experiences. Other than that, there’s not much else known about the game. The big release date, or even a release window, will be the most elusive details to watch out for.

What Comes Next

The Witcher 4 is not the only project that CD Projekt Red has in the works. In fact, it isn’t the only thing that’s Witcher-related on the development list. In fact, The Witcher 4 is the start of a brand-new trilogy. Outside of said trilogy, the studio is working on a spin-off game that is only known as Codename Sirius for now. That game will offer a multiplayer experience. An entire remake of the original game that is codenamed Canis Majoris is also in the works. However, it’s safe to say that neither of the projects is as far into production as The Witcher 4 is.

Whatever Project Polaris has in store for players, there’s one thing that is for certain. Excitement is in the air for the sequel of its nearly 10-year-old predecessor, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. While the game may be different for the many fans of Geralt of Rivia, it will be an incredible time when the game is actually released. Until then, future players will just have to wait to hear more news. With how early it is in the full production phase, they just might be waiting a long while yet for this assuredly action-packed game.
