Epic Boss Tim Sweeney’s Unreal Engine 6 Metaverse Plans

Epic CEO Tim Sweeney has some Unreal Engine 6 metaverse plans as he says the Engine will join Fortnite and other Unreal games in the metaverse, and he’s actually spending big money to make that happen. He claims that the company spends about ‘a billion dollars’ each year, which is allegedly ‘more than Epic Games’ revenue,’ to make that a reality. He intends to merge the ‘ease of use of the Fortnite Unreal Editor’ and the ‘high power of the high-end game engine’ together. The end result would be known as the perfect Unreal Engine 6.

In a recent interview with The Verge, Tim Sweeney, Epic Games CEO, laid out his Unreal Engine 6 metaverse plans for the decade. And, he explains the reason why 16% of Epic’s workforce got lay off last year to achieve his plans. “Last year, before Unreal Fest, we were spending about a billion dollars a year more than we were making,” Sweeney said. As explained earlier Sweeney has a focus on better linking the easy-to-use Fortnite Unreal Editor with the Unreal Engine, which would be an evolved form of the Fortnite Creative tools mapmalers which have been put into great effect in creating maps in the modes in Fortnite.

Sweeney goes on to say, “The real power will come when we bring these two worlds together so we have the entire power of our high-end game engine merged with the ease of use that we put together in [Unreal Editor for Fortnite],” said Sweeney. “That’s going to take several years. And when that process is complete, that will be Unreal Engine 6.”

Sweeney’s Intentions on the Unreal Engine 6 Metaverse Plans

As a part of his Unreal Engine 6 metaverse plans, Sweeney wants developers who use Unreal to have the ability to “build an app once and then deploy it as a standalone game for any platform.” That’s not all, Epic wants developers to be able to incorporate their work into Fortnite or any other unreal game. So simply put, the term “metaverse” would be a good description for the coming Unreal Engine 6.

“We announced that we’re working with Disney to build a Disney ecosystem that’s theirs, but it fully interoperates with the Fortnite ecosystem. And what we’re talking about with Unreal Engine 6 is the technology base that’s going to make that possible for everybody.” That’s exactly what Epic is looking forward to, a metaverse for developers to create wonderful games for any platform of their choice and also build an ecosystem that fully interoperates with another Unreal game. This is just like in the case of Disney and Fortnite.

Conclusion

While that’s the case, there’s quite a lot of usage of Unreal in indie and double-A games. Even some major game developers known for their in-house engines are now in favor of Epic’s Unreal Engine, with CD Projekt and Halo Studios (formerly 343 Industries) being the most surprising. The billions worth of investments by Epic into these big plans for Unreal Engine 6 would most likely be worth it, as pure hard work and determination follow through. And that’s not the main reason; developers’ adoption of Epic’s middleware has a big impact on the outcome of Tim Sweeney’s Unreal Engine 6 metaverse plans.
