Tiny Tina In Borderlands: Understanding Delightful Insanity

tiny tina borderlands

Tiny Tina has become a major mainstay in the Borderlands series, thanks to her unstable personality and penchant for explosives. From her first appearance in the second Borderlands game to being a dungeon master in Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, Tina is an unforgettable NPC who has left a huge impact on the series. In this article, we will look at why Tina is such a hit with gamers, as well as her background story and interactions with other characters. For those seeing the new Borderlands movie that needs a reminder of who exactly Tiny Tina is, we’ve got you covered.

Tiny Tina Brings The Boom To Borderlands

We first meet Tiny Tina in Borderlands 2, where she collaborates with the Vault Hunters to stop a Hyperion supply train with suicide bomb-equipped toys. It is revealed that she is 13 years old at this time and that her parents were killed by Handsome Jack’s slag mutation experiments. Tina escaped by using a grenade hidden in her dress and vowed revenge. She eventually gets her revenge when she catches up with Flesh-Stick, a bandit who sold her family to Hyperion. She, with the Vault Hunters’ help, throws a ‘tea party’, which involves players fighting off bandits until Flesh-Stick is electrocuted to death.

Tina has a warped personality, most likely due to her trauma of losing her parents and exposure to the harsh world of Pandora. She delights in murder, as seen in the poem she reads to the Vault Hunters about killing Jack, her idolization of mass murderers like Sully the Stabber, and the partaking of actual murder itself. Tina also has some interesting dialogue performed by voice actor Ashly Burch. Some memorable quotes include: “All around the Sta-ctus plant, the stalker chased the bandit, the stalker thought ’twas all in fun-POP! Goes the bandit!”, and “BURN ALL THE BABIES!!!!!”.

Delightfully Insane

Tina has brought her unique brand of insanity to multiple games in the series. Besides appearing in DLC for Borderlands 2, she cameos in The Pre-Sequel, where the Dungeons and Dragons-inspired “Bunkers and Badasses” is introduced. In Borderlands 3, Tina is about 20 years old and working for the Crimson Raiders. She helps the Vault Hunters rescue Sir Hammerlock (by using explosives of course), and establishes “Boom Town”, a home and base of operations for the group. Whatever the situation, Tina is always almost too happy to help.

In Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, she acts as the game master (or dungeon master) for the tabletop RPG “Bunkers & Badasses”. This game has the players attempting to navigate the chaotic fantasy world that Tina has created, as well as the monsters she has chosen for them to fight. Tina’s explosively mischievous antics are on full display here as she guides players through a whimsically twisted world of her own making. Tina’s violent nature and limitless unpredictability make her a character that never has any dull moments, for better or for worse. Her expertise in explosives is always welcome though.

Tiny Tina, Big Screen

With the immense popularity of the character, it makes sense that Tina would be included in the film adaptation. Brought to life by Ariana Greenblatt, Tina finally makes her first silver screen appearance. While you have to go see the movie to judge the performance, Greenblatt is at least closer in age to the video game character than some of the other casting choices. Greenblatt has a lot to live up to given the fan interest in the character, so we only hope that she can do a decent job replicating Tina’s wild, erratic personality and her affinity for explosions.

Tina has been a part of the Borderlands universe for over a decade now and is a favorite character among many fans. With her deadly engineering skills and unstable yet lovable personality, Tina has established a legacy for herself that’s bigger than she is. How she will be portrayed in the movie has yet to be seen, but we can rest assured that Gearbox surely won’t abandon the character in future games, at least. Tina has become as much a part of the franchise as characters like Claptrap and Lilith, so you know we won’t be seeing the last of her. So hand your explosives over and let Tiny Tina work her magic.
