Top 3 Best Call of Duty Zombies Maps

Call of Duty Zombies

Call of Duty Zombies has been a staple in the Call of Duty franchise since its inception in Call of Duty: World at War in 2008. What makes an incredible Zombies experience is great map design from how the map layout is formatted, what side quests can be performed, and the intriguing personality and lore of the map.

What makes a memorable Call of Duty Zombies map?

There are many factors to consider when making a zombie map, but what makes one beloved in the community? First and foremost, the layout and format of the map. There are two main types of players in zombies: Trainers and Campers, trainers mainly run around one looped area or an open area if possible to gather as many zombies as possible before killing them to progress through the rounds. A camper chooses a well-enclosed spot in the map to hold down and defend, this allows them to focus solely on the zombies and kill them as they spawn. There is a minor group of players that run around and kill zombies as they encounter them Rambo-style, but these players are mainly comprised of newcomers to the series. The second important aspect is the map’s features. Does it have unique side quests, beloved and notable perks, memorable wonder weapons, and a fun and challenging main easter egg? All of these can make or break a map for players. That being said, here’s our top 3 picks.

3. Kino Der Toten

Being a starting map for Zombies in Call of Duty: Black Ops back in 2010, Kino der Toten was an instant fan favorite in the Zombies community, even to this day. Although it may seem a bit basic by today’s standards, there’s a reason why this map has stood the test of time over the years. Being set in the late 60s in an abandoned theatre used by Group 935, Kino Der Toten (German for Theatre of The Dead) earns its name by creating an amazing atmosphere of misery and despair. Not to mention, the other locals that the player can be transported to when using the teleporter to reach pack-a-punch. Despite Black Ops Zombies being on the weaker side of weapon selection, it more than makes up for it with its selection of fantastic wonder weapons. Not only does the iconic Ray Gun make its return but also it comes with the inclusion of another iconic wonder weapon: The Thundergun. These fun toys make the experience all the more fun, not to mention the introduction of a new perk: Mule Kick, which allows the player to hold three guns instead of the usual two, with the downside of losing your third weapon upon going down.

The map design is fantastic, although not perfect, and provides many opportunities for training and camping to the higher rounds. The lore is ever expanded with the film reels that can be found in the different rooms that the player can teleport to. The main crew has been further fleshed out, making them more beloved with their unique personalities, along with many small easter eggs around the map.

2. Firebase Z

The second map made for the new generation of Call of Duty Zombies, Firebase Z was an exciting and welcome addition to the map roster in Black Ops Cold War Zombies. The map progression feels natural and is simple to follow. Setting up the map for power and pack-a-punch is simple and pretty straightforward, opening up the map to exploration pretty early on. Despite the one-dimensional operators the player can play during the game, interactions with important story characters are intriguing and fluid, especially since you can interact with two of them on the map itself.  Every path flows naturally and fluidly throughout the map, except the teleporter that links spawn to the main area. There’s also plenty to do in this map, along with the main easter egg, there are plenty of side easter eggs to do such as the map’s wonder weapon: the Rai-Kai, and the secret warp area where players can earn a secret loot crate full of rewards. One last thing worth mentioning is the special base defense rounds, every five rounds after entering the base and restoring power, an enormous creature known as the Orda attacks one of the three generators, the players must defend them, should they be successful, they will earn a carpenter and max ammo power-up. Excellent for keeping the player alert and the game refreshing.

1. Origins

Regarded as one of the best maps in the original Call of Duty Zombies storyline, Origins remains one of the best, if not, the best map in Call of Duty Zombies history. Serving as the series finale to the original zombies storyline, before it got retconned, much ambition was put into this map. Origins has ample to offer: challenges that reward the players for completing side objectives, four craftable wonder weapons that can all be upgraded, many secrets around the map, and an amazing main easter egg. The Black Ops 2 version of Origins has one of the best weapon selections in Call of Duty Zombies history, featuring many strong weapons such as the KSG, the MG-08, MP-40, STG-44, Tommy Gun, and many others. Not to mention, the starting pistol becomes a powerful weapon once pack-a-punched, being on par with the Ray Gun Mark II. The map itself is integrated perfectly, allowing the player to move flawlessly throughout the map. The only downside is that the areas are covered in mud which can severely slow the player down, however, it can be countered by jumping, having Stamin-up equipped, or using the zombie tank.

Origins remains a fan favorite in the community. It would seem to continue that way, even as the new generation of Call of Duty Zombies starts to head its way to stand the test of time.

Departing Thoughts

Call of Duty Zombies remains one of the most popular game modes in the Call of Duty franchise. There are many other great maps worth mentioning but they don’t come close to these three maps. As Black Ops 6 Zombies peers around the corner for its late October release, let’s hope that these maps live up to the hype and become as iconic as these maps have before them.
