Silver the Hedgehog’s powers have made him a formidable character in the Sonic universe. His ability to move objects, teleport, and fire attacks with his mind also offers him a unique position. So far, we have seen no other character possess the kind of talent Silver has. These gifts make Silver a force to be reckoned with. More than that, it makes Silver an ideal playable character worthy of getting his own game.
Silver’s origin
Silver the Hedgehog is one of the more perplexing characters to examine in the Sonic franchise. On the surface, Silver is a time traveler who wants to undo the devastation that destroys his future. The idea behind what that means changes depending on the game. Sonic 06 was released in 2006, and the game introduced Silver the Hedgehog. The young time traveler goes to the past, initially to stop Sonic, but later to stop Mephiles. Silver’s future is reduced to devastation due to Iblis, and he is desperate to stop him. Ultimately, Silver succeeds when he joins forces with Silver and Shadow, destroying Mephiles’ fusion with Iblis, Solaris.
Sonic 06’s ending has Sonic travel to the past with Elise, and extinguish Solaris’ flame. This erases the events from happening and rewrites Silver’s future. Silver the Hedgehog is reintroduced in Sonic Rivals, going after the interdimensional outlaw, Eggman Nega. Sonic and his friends aid Silver in defeating Eggman Nega. However, Eggman Nega would return in Sonic Rivals 2, released the next year. Now in control of a fiery entity known as ‘Ifrit’, Eggman Nega unleashes him on Sonic’s dimension. His plan is foiled however and he is killed in the aftermath of the battle.
Silver’s powers
Silver’s powers and gifts offer him many uses when fighting strong opponents. His most common use for abilities is psychokinesis, which lets Silver control objects around him. He can easily lift numerous objects and use them as projectiles. 2011’s Generations has ‘Meteor Storm’, which shows that Silver can merge and compress numerous objects into a large junk ball.
Silver can use his psychokinesis for limited flight via levitation, which offers him more mobility. Silver can also create temporary constructs with his power shown in Generations creating cutting ‘wave’ attacks. Silver’s abilities are not just to harm enemies though, because he can create barriers to block the force of strong attacks. Overall, Silver has the potential to be one of the most powerful characters, but his naivete can cloud his judgment.
Why Silver needs a game
Silver the Hedgehog has all the makings for a strong protagonist. He has a strong sense of justice and carries the burden of protecting the past. Although he was wrong to trust Mephiles, Silver genuinely believed he was doing the right thing. He becomes a pivotal ally in helping stop Solaris, and he even achieves his super form in the finale. Silver may not seem like it, but he has the heart of a hero, and he’s just waiting for a chance.
Sonic is a speedster first and foremost, using his spindashes and hops to hit targets. Shadow the Hedgehog is fast, but uses guns and chaos powers to destroy enemies. Silver the Hedgehog has his niche to fulfill, and the potential for his psychokinesis in a game offers many level ideas. He has enough that makes him stand out from both Sonic and Shadow in terms of gimmicks while retaining the basic characteristics needed.
Silver has the potential for stardom
The fandom has been split on Silver the Hedgehog as a character for years. Some fans find Silver’s backstory sympathetic and enjoy his powers. Others find him incompetent for listening to the evil Mephiles and think he has wasted potential. Silver’s reputation has softened in recent years thanks to newer adaptations building on his character. The character still has the potential to reach bigger heights, however.
Silver’s powers make him a spectacle to behold in any game where he gets to use them. Many of his gimmicks, however, would be more fun to explore in a bigger title. Giving Silver a game would offer an underused character another opportunity at stardom. Silver could be granted a second opportunity, and it could jettison his popularity to new levels.
