The Able Sisters have been a fan-favorite duo since the introduction of the Animal Crossing franchise. In every title they grace, Mabel and Sable manage a tailor shop that provides the player with new clothing options. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the hedgehog sisters return and offer such services along with other benefits. However, getting the clothier up and running in New Horizons is somewhat time-consuming compared to prior games. This guide will detail all the required steps to unlock the Able Sisters and their store.
Preliminary Steps
Unlocking the Able Sisters will happen quite early in a New Horizons playthrough. With that said, some preliminary steps must be taken before the clothing store will be available. First, the player must construct the Museum. This will require donating 5 fish/bugs to Tom Nook. After the requisite amount has been handed over, Blathers will call Nook and voice his interest in establishing a Museum on the island. Nook agrees, allowing the player to secure a location for the new project via a tent. Blathers will arrive wherever the player erects the tent and accepts donations. The items provided can include fossils and sea creatures. Once fifteen contributions have been made, the Museum will be ready in about 2 days.
Nook’s Cranny must also be built to access Mabel and Sable. This will require repaying the first debt to Tom Nook. After doing so, seek out and speak with Timmy, who requests the following materials: 30 wood, 30 softwood, 30 hardwood, and 30 iron nuggets. The various wood stacks may burn through a few axes; clanging your shovel on rocks will provide the nuggets. Once the necessary materials have been provided, the player will choose a location for Nook’s Cranny, much like with the Museum. The next day, the villagers will hold a ceremony celebrating the construction of the new general store. At this point, depending on your progress, you may need to upgrade the Resident Services building.
Unlock Able Sisters
With both the Museum and Nook’s Cranny complete, Mabel can be discovered chatting with Timmy and Tommy inside their shop. She will then begin to periodically turn up as a visitor in the Resident Service’s plaza every week, selling clothing. From here, there is some dispute about how to progress further with the Able Sisters. Most sources agree that the player will need to spend around 5k Bells across 2 of Mabel’s visits. If Mabel appears, the best advice is to try and buy as much as possible to ensure your chances of triggering the store’s construction. If you have fulfilled these requirements, she will state her interest in building the shop when she next frequents the island.
The player will then select a place to set up the Able Sisters, as with the aforementioned Museum and Cranny. Thankfully, this will not require any additional materials to finish construction. After 2 days, the seamstress’ shop will be open for business.
After Being Built
With the Able Sisters finished, the player can drop by the shop daily for new apparel. New Horizons introduces a handy feature in the form of a changing room, allowing you to try on clothes before buying them. Said changing room has the added benefit of making purchasing items in bulk easier, filling your catalog of orderable items at quicker speeds. The Able Sisters also offers the Custom Design Portal. Those with a Nintendo Switch Online membership can download custom designs made by other players, as well as upload their own. As with past games, be sure to speak with the introverted Sable every day. Doing so provides both backstory and special patterns.
Additionally, Kicks and Label will begin appearing in the plaza after the Able Sisters are established. Kicks will sell footwear and backpacks, neither of which are sold at the tailor’s. Label, the middle child between Sable and Mabel, will arrive so long as the island has a 2-star rating. She will conduct fashion checks based on themes. Successfully passing the check will award the player with Tailor Tickets that can be exchanged at the Able Sisters for an item of up to 3k Bell value. While it would have been nice for her to have a larger role as in previous Animal Crossing entries, Label’s presence is still welcome. That covers what you need to know about the Able Sisters.
