Restoration Games’ second installment of its Unmatched Adventures series, Unmatched Adventures: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, brings the indelible TMNT franchise to tabletop gaming. The publisher has announced the game’s Kickstarter (set to launch in September 2024) and released some preliminary art. The look of what they’ve shown so far is all classic TMNT, with Shredder and Krang right out front, so followers of the shellsome foursome should be in for a fan-service tabletop treat.
What We Know So Far
Aside from a brief teaser trailer, and a subscribe-to-know-more landing page with a respectable splash of classic TMNT art, there isn’t much to go on. The biggest indicator of how the game will play is Restoration’s previous Unmatched release, Unmatched Adventures: Tales to Amaze. That title featured a wildly different theme (mid-20th century urban legends battling fictionalized historical figures), but the co-op, deck-building mechanics adopted from their Unmatched Game System for the Adventures series will likely carry over. As a publisher, Restoration tends to produce polished games with quality art and well-thought-out, balanced gameplay, so it’s a safe bet that they’ll shepherd the prized TMNT IP safely into enjoyable tabletop entertainment.
The announcement touts a September launch date for the Kickstarter campaign, which makes 2025 the earliest you’ll likely get to play the new title. How much of the game is already laid out, aside from the template of the series’ earlier installment, is anybody’s guess. Given how little art they’ve revealed, there may not be much to show yet, but the teaser trailer and splash imagery give strong hints as to the overall tone and art style. A lightly throw-back feel to the imagery and music recalls the original 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film and the deference to a standard rogue’s gallery points toward a faithful iteration of the beloved brothers.
TMNT in Tabletop Gaming
This isn’t the heroes in a half-shell’s first time hitting tabletops. IDW Comics has put out a number of games over the past several years, including 2016’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shadows of the Past, and more recently, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures series. Both games and their expansions were reasonably well received, and feature art contributions from TMNT’s original artist, Kevin Eastman, and design work by Kevin Wilson, as well as dungeon-crawler one-vs-many mechanics. Some of those elements may appear in the new game, as the focus on combat, teams, and card drawing looks similar, though the design and art teams are completely different.
Turtles in Other Media
A flurry of recent releases and announcements in shell-dwelling media raises the question of how far Restoration will get to run with the franchise licensing. 2023’s film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, penned by Seth Rogan, and the announced adaptation of the darker stand-alone series The Last Ronan by Eastman and Laird, indicate an enduring interest in the IP, and a willingness to push it in new directions. All interested parties seem intent on both satisfying long-standing fans and enticing new audiences, which can lead to mixed results, but might allow for some liberal adaptations.
Whether Restoration gets to latch onto an existing storyline or chooses to build their own rendition of the Turtle-verse remains to be seen. Whichever direction they end up taking, there’s plenty of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles content in everyone’s future.
