In 2010, Magic: The Gathering saw the release of The Planeswalkers, and we haven’t looked back since. These powerful companions are seen in the game as separate players and can drastically change the game with their abilities. As always, we can expect some exciting and interesting twists to Magic, but we’ll have to wait until Q3 of this year. While this new set, Duskmourn, which doesn’t have a release date yet, is revamping a certain planeswalker. And you’ve seen this planeswalker before. Twice, actually. Who’s that planeswalker, you ask? We’ll get to that. For starters, though, let’s welcome you to your next nightmare. That nightmare is called:
Duskmourn: House of Horror. Stay Awhile. Stay Foreeeeeveeeer.
No, really. You’re going to want to stay for this. Sure, it’ll be gruesome, gory, scary, and, well, insane, but in this already bonkers MTG release schedule, nothing will be more insane than this.
Harkening back to the likes of Innistrad, we’re back into horror in a big way with Duskmourn for good reason. It’s just plain fun! In fact, Magic: The Gathering is often about a lot of the horror tropes when you think about it. I mean, have you seen what Ashiok or Elesh Norn look like? Yeah. They are some freaky ladies.
More importantly, this set, soon to release in Q3 of 2024, after Bloomburrow, will highlight yet another plane of existence that was somehow created with the rupture in the multiverse according to this new Dragonstorm Arc we’re going to be seeing. But here’s the good news: we get to see a very familiar face.
It Looks Like Kaito Will Be Returning in This Set
And let’s just say we’re psyched.
We recently saw him in two expansions: Kamigawa Neon Dynasty and Phyrexia: All Will Be One. Out of all the planeswalkers, Kaito certainly introduced some interesting gameplay that still, to this day, with the decks out on Standard, makes a dent. For good reason.
Kaito’s slippery. Kaito’s shadowy. He’s a ninja (duh, Kamigawa, remember?). But we find it refreshing that we get to see this shadow assassin in a horror mansion straight out of the 1970s-1980s.
That being said, I think it’s fair to say we may not see a whole lot of vampires or even werewolves in this set. We get enough of them in the Innistrad sets of last year. So the good news is that, as far as horror is concerned, Duskmourn will introduce us to something a bit more modern and less gothic.
Here’s the important thing to know about Duskmourn, though.
Duskmourn Will Be the First Set After the Standard Rotation
That’s right. It’s finally coming up. And this will be a strange feeling, given the recent adjustment to the Standard calendar. Soon, you’ll be saying farewell to the likes of Farewell. The Voice of the Blessed shall be silenced as well. Raffine will find a way back to New Capenna, leaving Esper decks looking for new ways to play. It’ll be an exciting time. We’ll, of course, still have Outlaws of Thunder Junction, Assassin’s Creed, and more.
And, of course, we’ll still have Sheoldred the Apocalypse…. Damn.
It’s a welcome opportunity, though, as the meta will shift and offer some opportunities for ideas that at one time in this Standard metagame didn’t match up well to the likes of Esper Control and mono-white while trying to keep mono-red at bay. We’ll see what happens.
Let’s just hope Mono-red doesn’t run away with the game like the color tends to always do! We can only hope.
