RPG enthusiasts have eaten pretty well so far this year with releases like Final Fantasy Seven: Rebirth, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Persona Three Reload, and Shin Megami Tensei Five: Vengeance. The year is only half over though which means gamers still have the back half of 2024 to look forward to even more highly anticipated RPGs such as Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Avowed, and more! If you’re a fan of RPGs you won’t want to miss these upcoming RPG titles!
Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Formerly known as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf for the longest time, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the fourth installment in Bioware’s epic fantasy RPG franchise. Veilguard is said to take place ten years after Dragon Age: Inquisition which is apt because it’s also been ten years since Bioware’s last Dragon Age game which itself was Inquisition. Similar to other Bioware games, it will have a roster of companions that will join the main character, and similarly to Dragon Age Two, all companions will be pansexual which means regardless of the player character’s gender, they can romance any companion.
While there isn’t a confirmed release date yet, it has been confirmed it will be released in Fall 2024 barring any last-minute delays. My best guess is that it will more than likely be released in November which is when both Origins and Inquisition were also released. Dragon Age: The Veilguard will be releasing on PC, PlayStation Five, and the Xbox Series X/S later this Fall.
Avowed
Revealed back in the summer of 2020, Avowed is the next game in the Pillars of Eternity franchise which started in 2015 when Obsidian released Pillars of Eternity. Many cRPG fans including myself have been waiting for the next installment in the world of Eora ever since Pillars of Eternity Two: Dreadfire dropped back in 2018. Instead of being an isometric cRPG similar to PoE one and two, Avowed will have both first-person and third-person camera modes. Avowed is releasing this Fall for Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Game Pass.
Black Myth Wukong
Black Myth Wukong is the next project by Chinese-base game developer, Game Science with their first being a still in early access title called Art of War: Red Tides. Based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, Black Myth Wukong sees players play as a character named the Destined One. If the name Wukong in Black Myth Wukong sounds familiar, that’s because it’s also the surname of Sun Wukong who is the protagonist of Journey to the West.
Even though gameplay footage has led many to think it’s a Soulslike game, Game Science instead believes it’s closer to an action RPG than a Soulslike experience. While their first game will more than likely remain in Early Access hell, Black Myth Wukong will instead fully launch next month on August 20. PlayStation Five and PC owners can look forward to playing this Chinese action RPG next month while Xbox Series X/S owners unfortunately need to wait.
Assassin’s Creed: Shadows
Assassin’s Creed: Shadows is the next game in Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Franchise with Assassin’s Creed: Mirage having launched last year. While AC: Mirage was more of a return to earlier AC games with many of the RPG elements removed, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows will instead continue the AC RPG trend that Ubisoft started in Assassin’s Creed: Origins. Shadows will also be bringing back the dual protagonist mechanic that we first saw in AC: Syndicate, way back in 2015. In Shadows, you can play as the black samurai Yasuke and/or as the ninja Naoe.
If you’re like me and can’t wait to play Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, you luckily won’t have to wait long as it launches on November 15th. Assassin’s Creed: Shadows will be available for PC, PlayStation Five, Xbox Series X/S, Mac, and iPad.
GreedFall Two: The Dying World
GreedFall Two: The Dying World is an upcoming action RPG which is a sequel to 2019’s GreedFall, developed by Spiders. GreedFall is set during the colonial period in the game’s fantasy world where your character, De Sardet, is trying to find a cure for a deadly malady called the Malichor. De Sardet not only had muskets, pistols, and swords at their disposal but also has access to magic, as well as traps, and also bombs.
Greedfall is very much an AA style of video game with a very heavy Mass Effect/Dragon Age RPG influence. It has a similar dialogue system to both games, you gather a host of companions you can adventure with, and you can even romance them! GreedFall feels very much like a callback to older Bioware-style RPGs which is why I enjoyed it. It’s also why I’m looking forward to the sequel. GreedFall Two: The Dying World will be entering into Steam early access on September 24, 2024.
