All About Vault 3 in Fallout: New Vegas

Out of the six explorable Vaults within Fallout: New Vegas, Vault 3 is seemingly the most mundane. No mutated monsters or stories of cruel experiments are held within. However, the story of the Vault is still tragic since the people inside still experienced a terrible fate. To understand the full picture of the residents’ demise and the true gory details of it, one must also understand its relatively peaceful origins. This is the complete story of Vault 3 as well as a guide to help players experience the underground location in full.

The Complete Story of Vault 3

Like all of its more than 100 sister locations, Vault 3 was created by Vault-Tec Corporation before the Great War. Its explorable areas feature a large recreation area, standard living quarters, and a maintenance wing. It was created to be a Control Vault, meaning the Vault dwellers residing there lived a normal life in the post-apocalyptic world. They dealt with no experiments meant to test their physical or mental resolves in often brutal ways. This cannot be said for the rest of the Vaults in the game.

The peaceful lives of the vault dwellers came to an end when a water leak forced them to open the vault to seek a solution. They were able to interact with the outside world for several weeks. They traded with the people they met and began to establish connections with those who were once strangers. These good times in a bleak scenario came to an end when they encountered the deadly gang of raiders known as Fiends. The people of this gang have no limits to their cruelty. This can easily be seen and heard about if players accept a Three-Card Bounty by speaking with Major Dhatri at Camp McCarran.

As one might expect, the Fiends did not treat the residents of Vault 3 with kindness. Instead, they slaughtered every one of them before taking the Vault for themselves. Given the sadistic tendencies of many of the Fiends, one can only imagine that some of the deaths weren’t exactly quick. From there, Vault 3 gradually became a mess. Graffiti now covers the walls and debris litters the once pristine floors. What was once a shelter from danger and radiation became a shelter for the Fiends to help keep them away from the community of Westside, which is located Northeast of the Vault.

Where to Find the Vault

Vault 3 is located among the South Vegas ruins in the western part of the map. The entire area is filled with Fiends just waiting to fill the Courier and anyone else that comes along with bullet holes. Players will likely learn the exact location of the Vault from Private Ortega outside of the NCR sharecropper farms or Colonel Hsu at Camp McCarran. The latter involves accepting a quest to wipe the Fiends out as part of an unmarked quest called Bounty Killer.

Quests Related to the Location

Including Bounty Hunter, a total of six side quests are related to Vault 3.  The other two unmarked quests are known as I Love Bananas; and Suits You, Sarah. The first of those involves freeing a group of named NPCs being held captive by the Fiends residing there. The second is less violent since it only involves selling Vault suits to Sarah Weintraub at the Vault 21 Gift Shop in New Vegas.

The named quests that this location is involved in are Aba Daba Honeymoon, Still in the Dark, and I Could Make You Care. The first is given by Diane at Red Rock Drug Lab, the second by Elder McNamara at the bunker within Hidden Valley, and the third by a companion named Veronica. I Could Make You Care can only be triggered after allowing Veronica to follow the Courier and taking her to three locations that will make her start to view the Brotherhood of Steel differently. The ramp to Vault 3 is one of those places. This quest should be triggered early on since it gives the player easy access to the Hidden Valley.

Aba Daba Honeymoon has several bugs that are important to take note of. Those bugs are why players should not interact with the leader of the Fiends in Vault 3, Motor-Runner, before having the quest active. To help prevent any quest-breaking bugs, players should try to complete four of the six total quests in this order: Aba Daba Honeymoon, Bounty Killer, Still in the Dark, and I Love Bananas. The quests Suits you, Sarah and I Could Make You Care don’t strictly need Vault 3 to complete them.
