Five New VR Shooters Dropping in 2024

Headset-based gaming is good at a lot of things, but VR shooters remain one of the most accessible experiences on the platform. With the year almost over, it’s surprising how many new headsets and games are still rolling out for the cutting-edge form factor. With so much to choose from, here are a few new VR shooters to keep an eye out for at the tail end of 2024. The schedule is packed, but these stand out as ones to take note of.

A  rare entry in the rhythm shooter sub-genre, Metal: Hellsinger VR updates the original flatscreen game from The Outsiders, bringing it to Meta Quest on September 26th, and PSVR2 and Steam VR on October 3rd. The game plays like the hellspawn of Dark Souls and Bethesda’s Doom reboot, with players taking on the role of “The Outsider”, slaying the minions of hell to a thundering soundtrack composed by Two Feathers. The score features vocals from a long list of metal heavyweights, including Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Randy Blythe (Lamb of God), Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy), Matt Heafy (Trivium), Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquility) and many more.

Spatial Ops

One of a handful of new mixed-reality shooters, Spatial Ops turns your home into a combat arena in either a 2-hour single-player campaign or a PVP arena with support for up to eight players in co-location. Developer Resolution Games, who originally released the title as an open beta for Sidequest in 2022, has announced an Autumn 2024 release for the full game. Using spatial mapping to populate your playspace with objects and AI combatants, as well as portals to reveal shooting gallery set pieces, the game tasks players with defending Earth from an extra-dimensional threat.

FRENZIES

Looking for VR shooters that bring the pure PvP arena madness? Then Near Light’s Frenzies is the title for you. Following in the tradition of madcap multiplayer treats like Gang Beasts or Fall Guys, with the aesthetics of a 90’s club scene version of TRON (with some clear inspiration from Squid Game), the shooter supports up to 12 players in a variety of solo or team-based game modes. The official release date has not been confirmed, but it will launch for both the Meta Quest and PSVR2.

VENDETTA FOREVER

Forthcoming from MeatSpace Interactive is the stylized tactical shooter VENDETTA FOREVER. Described by publishers nDreams as delivering a “cult action paradise”, the game looks like a Superhot-Sin City mashup, with starkly contrasted abstracted baddies spraying lead across a variety of classic cinematic locations. The fast-paced kinetic shooter leans heavily on its novel “lo-kill-motion” mechanic, whereby killing an enemy allows the player to grapple to that fallen foe’s weapon and propel themselves forward. With a demo currently available on the Meta Quest Store, the game is expected to be released in full on October 24th.

Action Hero

A more retro version of VENDETTA’s action-movie-immersion model is Action Hero from Fast Travel Games, creators of the upcoming hide-and-seek PvP Mannequin. Action Hero is a body-movement-reliant shooter with puzzles, melee combat, and physical obstacle course sections. But mostly it’s a shooter, running full steam into over-the-top action reminiscent of Indiana Jones, Samurai Cop, and other kitchen-sink shoot-em-ups. Treasure hunting, training montages, and some much-touted dinosaur punching are all on offer here. As for release dates, their website just says “late 2024”. The title will be available on the Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro.

For as little attention as VR gets these days, there’s an impressive slate of titles on the way both this year and next. The above list of VR shooters barely scratches the surface of what players can expect, and with new headsets being announced weekly, it’s safe to assume that the development of novel titles with boundary-pushing mechanics will continue powering forward. Happy headset-ing!
