Warcraft Birthday Blitz Celebrates With Partner Franchise Overwatch 2

Overwatch 2 x Warcraft Gamescom Blizzard at Gamescom

With Gamescom going on right now, tons of new gaming news is coming out left and right from all of our favorite developers and Blizzard is no exception. With this being their first Gamescom since 2019, the company has stepped back into the spotlight for Warcraft‘s 30th anniversary with big reveals for a crossover with Overwatch 2. So, what are the big surprises? Come along as we talk about all the Warcraft anniversary content on its way in season 12.

If you open Overwatch right now, you’ll be greeted with a trailer showcasing the new hero, Juno, as well as the new battle pass skins. The pass is themed in ancient Egypt this time, with the addition of a mythic Anubis Reaper skin and a new clash map, Throne of Anubis. However, at the end of the trailer, we catch glimpse a very familiar sword hitting the ground. Juno narrates by asking what that is, and I think we all know. That sword is definitely Frostmourne, the blade of the Lich King himself, Arthas Menethil.

While this reveal doesn’t even scratch the surface of the Gamescom announcements, it definitely hints at the upcoming Warcraft celebration. Fans speculate that the presence of the mythical sword is alluding to an Arthas themed skin for Reinhardt. This seems like the most probable outcome, as Reinhardt’s imposing stance and use of exclusively melee weapons makes him the perfect candidate to adopt the persona. However, there’s still no confirmation on this, so we’ll have to wait and see.

The Banshee Queen Rises

The rumors are true. Blizzard’s featured Overwatch reveal at Gamescom was the addition of a Sylvanas Windrunner skin for Widowmaker. This long-awaited skin is something fans of both franchises have wanted to see for a long time. Widowmaker’s blue skin and use of a sniper rifle makes her the perfect character to take on the Banshee Queen’s bow and icy personality. It seems like a natural fit.

This new Widowmaker skin will fit in nicely right alongside Magni Torbjorn, Blackhand Doomfist, Illidan Genji, Tyrande Symmetra, and Blood Elf Symmetra. These are all Warcraft skins that have been released previously, with Illidan Genji being infamously the rarest. Sadly, Blizzard has not announced another Blizzcon for the foreseeable future. While gamers certainly miss sharing their love of Blizzard’s many beloved franchises with each other in person, this lack of a Blizzcon is actually beneficial to Overwatch 2 players. Illidan Genji was only obtainable by purchasing a ticket to Blizzcon in 2019. Since there are no cons to attend, we can be sure that Sylvanas Widowmaker will not be nearly as elusive.
