The X-Men are such an interestingly unique comic book team. It’s a team unlike any other. Most superhero-related teams in comic books shows or movies are all pretty much unrelated. Look at Marvel’s Avengers or DC’s Justice League. Both teams are comprised of solo superheroes who join forces for the greater good, but at the end of the day, they’re all their own entities. The X-Men are completely related to each other in the brotherhood they all share. They’re all mutants, a race of human beings that are born with extraordinary powers.
Due to this difference, they’re treated unjustly by humanity. Some mutants violently fight back, while others fight for good. The X-Men have recently regained a ton of cultural significance for a myriad of reasons, both in comics and in other multimedia forms like television and movies. These new series have revitalized the X-Men franchise, and you know what these excellent shows and movies prove? The world is in desperate need of a new X-Men game.
X-Men 97’s Popularity
I won’t mince words here. X-Men 97, a recently released television show starring the titular mutants blew up in popularity earlier this year, and this series was the main inspiration for this article. Why did this revival of a super-old cartoon do so well? It was mostly a perfect storm of a ton of awesome elements but everyone should take a look at the show. Visually, it is spectacular. The old voice cast returned, the new storylines introduced were compelling, and the entire package just oozes charm and love for the characters.
Cyclops, a character that back in the 90s, was seen by many as the face of the X-Men, lost a lot of his popularity in the past twenty years. Now, he’s as popular as he has ever been. This is due to his character getting a ton of great, really stylish moments in the show. And that isn’t even half of it, because every character in this show, from Wolverine to Storm to Gambit and Magneto, gets not only great action scenes but even better character writing. This show put the X-Men back on the map in the public consciousness. Now’s the time to capitalize with a video game.
Hickman’s New Era of X
Starting back in 2019, superstar comic writer Jonathan Hickman was put in charge of the main X-Men comics. Marvel wanted the series to be revitalized, so they gave Hickman full creative control over the X-comics, and the ideas and stories that Hickman and the various artists came up with were nothing short of phenomenal. This new age of X-Men comics was called the “Krakoan” era, mostly due to the setting of these comics.
These comics got so much widespread attention from fans due to how fresh and new the direction of these comics was. The art was not only beautiful, but this story had mutants separating themselves on a remote island from humanity, and fan-favorite antagonists like Magneto finally came to the light side. This story was so good it made comic fans want more, and now, even though this age is over, the X-Men comics are still experimenting with new, fun ideas. This summer, a new run will start, and that just goes to show how ever-evolving the series is, and also that fans will eat these comics up for the great character writing and exciting set pieces. They’d also eat up a video game right now.
Deadpool and Wolverine and the Future
It goes without saying that Deadpool and Wolverine, a hotly anticipated third installment to this series, is releasing this month. Fans have wanted to see these two characters crossover for decades on the big screen, and they will finally have that. The X-Men brand overall is really popular and massive, and it shocks me that we don’t have a recent game for the series. The last time the X-Men got a dedicated video game was back in 2011, with X-Men Destiny, a game that did poorly both critically and financially.
Insomniac, known for the Spyro and recent Spider-Man games, is creating a Wolverine game, and leakers have found they are in the early stages of making a full-on X-Men game. This news is very exciting since the IP is long overdue for a video game installment. As a fan, I hope the game has fun, unique gameplay that captures the combat of every single X-member of the team, as well as a compelling story. X-Men comics are so beloved due to their morally gray conflicts and compelling characters, so hopefully the new game will do those elements justice.
