Dr. Disrespect was mysteriously banned from Twitch in June of 2020. Many questions arose as to why the popular streamer was dismissed from the streaming platform. The ban took place shortly after Twitch promised to ban anyone accused of sexual harassment or abuse. This left people questioning as to why this ban occurred but no answers were given. Almost four years later the answer surfaced and it is not pretty. The accusations lodged against Dr. Disrespect left the gaming community stunned.
Former Twitch Employee Sheds Light
On June 21, 2024, ex-Twitch employee Code Connors tweeted a revelation that shocked the streaming community. According to Connors, Guy Beahm, known as Dr. Disrespect, used Twitch whispers (the site’s equivalent of DMs) to speak with a minor while trying to meet up with said minor at Twitchcon.
The next day, Dr. Disrespect said in a tweet: “Listen, I’m obviously tied to legal obligations from the settlement with Twitch but I just need to say what I can say since this is the f*****g internet. I didn’t do anything wrong, all this has been probed and settled, nothing illegal, no wrongdoing was found, and I was paid.”
Dr. Disrespect Addressed the Issue
On June 25, Disrespect addressed the allegations after many years. Dr. Disrespect tweeted: “Were there Twitch whisper messages with an individual minor back in 2017? The answer is yes. Were there real intentions behind these messages, the answer is absolutely not. These were casual, mutual conversations that sometimes leaned too much in the direction of being inappropriate, but nothing more.” He went on to state nothing illegal occurred and he obtained a settlement with Twitch in civil court.
A glaring issue with this tweet is Dr. Disrepect’s use of the edit feature. After making the original tweet, he edited the usage of “minor” out and only edited the word back in after X (formerly Twitter) users called him out on the edit. As it stands, it confirms that he did message a minor when he was about 35 years old.
Aftermath
Since the allegations, Dr. Disrespect has lost many of his sponsorships. Midnight Society, the gaming studio co-founded by Beahm, cut ties with him. The studio stated it believed in Disrepect’s innocence but the facts, while difficult to hear, were the reason for this removal. Robert Bowling, studio head, added in a tweet: “If you inappropriately message a minor. I can not work with you. Period.”
NBA 2K 24 is removing Disrespect as a playable character after the next patch. The San Francisco 49ers announced the dropping of their sponsorship of the streamer after the allegations. Turtle Beach Headset also dropped its partnership with Disrespect as the special edition headset is no longer found on the site.
Where does Dr. Disrespect go from here? According to his tweet, he’s going nowhere. The streamer plans on taking a lengthy vacation with his wife and children and coming back with a heavy weight off his shoulders. Only time will tell if he is welcomed back with open arms.
