Not long after Epic revealed the goal of a ‘persistent universe’ for the Fortnite-Disney crossover in February 2025, Epic revealed more details on the Fortnite collaboration. They have chosen certain properties abiding by the ratings of PG-13. This means you probably wouldn’t play as Mickey Mouse with a gun. Only a handful of characters have been selected including from Marvel and Star Wars for combat purposes. While those left out would be only for social or other non-combat purposes.
Interview with Persson
In a recent interview with The Verge, Epic EVP Saxs Persson says: “Not every outfit will be able to do everything. A [Lego minifig] doesn’t hold a gun… Some IPs are not teens or mature. They are E for everyone IPs.” But there are a few characters that are, more or less, going to hold guns like Mrs. Incredible, Maleficent, Cruella de Vil, and Captain Hook. These characters come from action animations and have a G rating.
While the specifics are not known, Persson’s Lego minifigs comment showed an insightful thought. From that, players can find the drawn line that separates characters for combat and those for social purposes. For a quick example, Moana and Frozen are rated PG, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be running around in a battle royale match with guns. Yet they have the potential to be as they showcased their abilities that can be used for combat.
Even though Disney decides to go within a certain rating for all combat characters, there may still be a boundary as to how they are selected. For example, the best-selling Disney films are chosen for a Kingdom Hearts world. Characters with no fighting moveset like Jack Skellington were given mage abilities to fight alongside Sora. The chances of seeing a rated-G character in Fortnite’s roster are very high.
Disney’s Massive Catalog
So far, there are a couple of Disney-owned characters that have been featured in the game. By far, Marvel will have the largest character roster as shown in the Absolute Doom trailer. It will feature the X-Men, the original Avengers, and Dr. Doom. There will be Disney characters that are solely made for social purposes. Recently joining
The persistent universe will offer a multitude of opportunities for consumers to play and interact with Disney and their partners. It all looks funny yet it’s quite fitting once you consider Marvel having a multiverse of its own. The same for Fortnite after announcing the addition of The Omniverse from Zero Point. Epic wants to include as many Disney characters as they see fit.
And Persson seems to be quite excited with what Disney is doing; ‘We want a persistent place where their properties can be there, but feel they belong in the ecosystem we’ve built,’ says Persson. ‘We see the power of implementing the magic here. [Players] want to be able to transport between a Fortnite experience, a Disney experience, or any experience.”
Conclusion
While Epic Games is making the right move regarding the characters that would be available for combat in Fortnite, that may not be what Fortnite players were expecting. Yet many players are looking forward to the future of this collaboration. After the success with Star Wars and the Absolute Doom update, they look forward to the other worlds featured in the trailer. Either way, players are one step closer to finally getting their hands on the Persistent Universe.
