What is LEGO Horizon Adventures (2024)?

Summer Game Fest’s Sony showcase found many new games announced. Among these is a game that might seem like a bit of an outlier among the rest: LEGO Horizon Adventures. This will not be the first time LEGO and Horizon have teamed together. LEGO released a 13.5-inch tall Tallneck set based on Horizon Forbidden West. Still, Aloy getting her opportunity to be part of this “world-building” video game seems different from other LEGO games. What do we know about this game and what big question has been asked since Horizon Adventures was announced?

LEGO’s Game Styles

Under TT Games Publishers, 35 LEGO styles of games have been published. All of them have been successful.  The worlds of Star Wars, Batman, Indiana Jones, and others have been brought to brick form since 2005. With the guidance of Warner Bros., LEGO has sold over 100 million games. LEGO takes a light-hearted approach to its video games. Do not grab LEGO Batman thinking it will have the same serious tone as the Arkham and Telltale Series. No, LEGO games are geared toward children.

It just so happens adults enjoy the games as well. Characters will run, jump, and destroy the around them. Doing so grants players with studs which are used to unlock characters and other surprises. There is another purpose to such destruction. Some parts are left behind allowing players to build ladders, bridges, or other items used to progress further into the game. Lives are not a both as a player that dies falls to pieces, loses some of their studs, and comes back seconds later.

LEGO and the Horizon Universe

The Faro Plague was set to destroy the earth until Dr. Elizabet Sobet intervened. While she never lived to see life restored, her implantation of Zero Dawn shut down all robot life which destroyed all biological matter. Zero Dawn began terraforming and reseeding life. Within 100 years, humans walked the earth once more. 894 years later, forces have risen which seek to destroy life once again. That’s where Aloy steps in. Viewed as an outsider, Aloy becomes the savior of all life on Earth in Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West.

Guerilla and Studio Gobo are co-developing a recreation of the events of Zero Dawn. Current videos show gameplay and humor familiar to the LEGO series of games while the sheer size of enemies from Horizon is on display. The world of LEGO Horizon Adventures is colorful and detailed. Players can either control two characters at once or play with a friend.

LEGO Horizon Adventures and a Question

The announcement of LEGO Horizon Adventures has led some to ask about the general audience of this title. LEGO games are generally meant for children. These children would know little to nothing of Horizon’s mythos. Horizon Zero Dawn is a game meant for adults. Would adults want to play a LEGO version of a game they have already played and beaten? I have a theory.

My parents introduced my brother and me to video games through the Atari and Nintendo Entertainment System. I have memories of my mother or father playing Super Mario Bros., Bigfoot (the monster truck, not the mythological creature), and other video games. This time spent gaming is one of the reasons I love video games today.

I believe a game like Horizon Adventures could help create memories like this for many families. A father could introduce the world of Horizon to his young daughter. He can teach her females can be heroes of the world and be much more than eye candy. This world can be opened to a generation who may be too young for the original but will eventually grow up to appreciate what their parents played. LEGO Horizon Adventures released Holiday of 2024 on PlayStation 5, PC, and Switch.
