Dante is one of gaming’s most stylish and recognizable characters. He was first introduced in the original Devil May Cry. This game was released back in 2001 on the PlayStation 2. Since this game’s inception, Dante has been a video game icon for many reasons, such as his wise-cracking attitude, memorable character design, and game difficulty. Let’s go over everything about this demon hunter from the original first game.
The Legendary Dark Knight
In the game’s opening cutscene, a huge wall of text educates the player on the lore of the series. Sparda, a general demon from hell, was a respected warrior. He was one of the most powerful demons in the entire realm. A war between the demon and the human realm broke out. Sparda took the side of the humans and ended the war. He then guarded the human realm for 2000 years. He eventually became a legendary figure in the history of the world. With this war done, he lived out the remainder of his days in the human world and eventually met a woman, Eva.
Eva and Sparda started a family, and they had two sons. Dante and Vergil were born half-human, half-demon, and were twins. When it comes to Sparda, his backstory is kept extremely vague, arguably on purpose. He is referred to as “the Legendary Dark Knight”. He’s a legend in the game’s universe, and this is particularly due to his effect on the world, and the small amount known about him. Sparda died of unknown causes. Some fans speculate it was old age, but it has never officially been said. What is known is once Sparda died, demons attacked his home, killing his wife, and separating Dante and Vergil, forcing them on their separate paths.
Dante’s Backstory
Before his death, Sparda split his power into three swords. The Rebellion, which he gave to Dante. The Yamato, which he gave to Vergil. And the force edge, which with enough power, can transform into the devil sword Sparda. Yes, he named the sword after himself. As for Dante, the player first sees him in this game in the opening cutscene. It has been twenty years since his mother died, so Dante is 28 years old. Trish, a random woman with electric, demonic powers shows up to his establishment.
Dante runs “Devil May Cry”, a demon-hunting business. He is introduced as a suave, quipping mercenary. Trish attacks him and looks like she’s about to defeat him. She stabs him, then electrocutes him, then throws her bike at him. Dante, who is on the back foot, eventually starts to try, and he blows her and her bike away with his twin pistols, Ebony and Ivory.
Trish reveals that she suspiciously looks just like Dante’s dead mother and that she’s here to bring Dante to Mallet Island, the place where Mundus, an ancient demon from the war, is going to be. Dante has a stake in this game because it’s Mundus who sent the demons to kill his mother as a child.
Devils Never Cry
Dante goes to Mallet Island with Trish, and there he fights countless demons and eventually even Mundus. Dante reunites with Vergil, who is brainwashed and under the control of Mundus in a new, demonic form called “Nelo Angelo”. This is revealed in the latter half of the game, and he recalls his brother. Trish betrays Dante, as she ends up being a demon created by Mundus. Dante lashes out, and Trish eventually sacrifices herself for him. Dante grows fed up with Mundus’ tricks, so they fight, and Dante emerges victorious.
After reuniting with Trish and forgiving her, they make their daring escape off the island. Before that, they destroy Mundus for good. They leave, and the game ends on a pretty cheery note. Trish now works as a devil hunter with Dante, and they go about their days killing demons. Of course, the lore of this series would be expanded on with other games and supplementary materials, but that’s all there was back in 2001.
