The Mega Man Series has all eyes anticipating a new release in 2025. The franchise’s last monumental release was 2018’s Mega Man 11. Since then, Mega Man has been busy, but not with creating new games. However, the franchise created collections to remaster old content like the Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network series. The Blue Bomber has been making moves, and the Mega Man franchise is developing something substantial.
Battle Network’s Latest Release
The ‘Legacy Collection’ series is a set of upscaled Mega Man games released in a bundle. The game compilations depend on which series they are a part of. For example, the classic-era Mega Man has two legacy collections, as does the X series.
The Zero and ZX series are connected to create a combination of six games. Overall, the Legacy Collections have provided relief for older Mega-Fans. Not only are the games collected on one title, but the games also offer bonus content in artwork and minigames.
The Legacy Collection series allows fans to enjoy their favorite titles on new consoles. The latest entry released last year in 2023 with the Battle Network series including six titles. Because of this, Battle Network’s count goes up to at least ten titles. Battle Network’s Legacy Collection was well-received by the series’ fans. There is no news for collections on Star Force or Legends. Nothing confirms or denies their inclusion in the Legacy Collection series.
Keeping Mega Man ‘Original’
Capcom shared recent information about the Mega Man series’ future on July 23rd, 2024. This information came from a Q&A during Capcom’s 45th Ordinary General General Meeting of Shareholders. When asked about any plans for the Mega Man series, Capcom responded that they are considering how to create games for it on an ongoing basis. There is no concrete information or implies a new title. Capcom’s rebuttal shows they might have a couple of ideas.
It’s easy to see why the Mega Man series is formulaic. The classic continuity follows the same structure, fighting Wily’s latest robot masters and stopping his scheme. The X series replicates the formula, which has you face off against the maverick bosses. The main antagonist of the X series, outside of Mega Man X8, is always Sigma.
He returns in a new form and causes problems for the main cast. Finding more ways to experiment with the Mega Man series’ usual formula is a huge opportunity to reevaluate the series. If it is anything like 11‘s Double Gear system, it will be a worthwhile addition to the series’ core gameplay.
The Blue Bomber’s Steady Future
Mega Man changed its trajectory after the 2000s due to the oversaturation of its multiple games. These titles included the Zero series, the Battle Network series, and the later-era X-series installments. The franchise later cut back on exploring new gameplay and it has worked.
Despite the current series drought, fans still expect Mega Man’s return. More importantly, Capcom is still rethinking ways to approach the Blue Bomber in his next title. Capcom’s patience shows a willingness to adapt to the current era. It is a requirement necessary for any video game franchise’s survival.
The Blue Bomber does not need to churn out as many titles as it did in the 2000s. The franchise can move forward at a slower but more qualitative pace. The Mega Man franchise is a massive hit but requires patience and faith to set it up. It could potentially release a new game in 2025. It could even come a year after that, in 2026. We do not know anything beyond Capcom’s statement. Overall, Mega Man’s future is in good hands, and we should trust Capcom to continue its process.
