When Does the New Madden NFL 25 Come Out?

Similar to Thanos from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, an annual Madden release is pretty much inevitable at this point. The next one is titled Madden NFL 25 and is coming soon. For those of you reading this article who don’t watch football, the reason it’s called Madden NFL 25 is because it covers the 2024-2025 NFL season.

They are always given the number of the year following the one it is released in. As for why it’s called Madden, it’s because the games are named after the legendary coach John Madden. Ever since 1990, Electronic Arts, or EA for short, has been releasing Madden games annually with Madden NFL 25 right around the corner.

Madden NFL 25 Again?

If the title Madden NFL 25 looks familiar, that’s because EA used the same title name back in 2013 due to the Madden franchise turning 25. The cover athlete for the Xbox One/360 versions of Madden NFL 25(2013)was Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders who played for the Detroit Lions his entire career. Adrian Peterson who played for the Minnesota Vikings meanwhile was the cover athlete for the PS3/PS4 versions of the game.

The reason they had two separate cover athletes for the Xbox One and PS4 versions was to promote the selling of the X-Box One and PlayStation 4 consoles which were both released in November of 2013. That was the same year that Microsoft tried implementing an asinine restriction of sorts for the Xbox One to curb game sharing while Sony put out this hilarious video which pretty much won them E3 that year. Honestly, it seems pretty uninspired that EA went the lazy route and is calling it Madden NFL 25 again. They could have at least called it Madden 2025 or something instead of just reusing the same title.

Release Date

Madden NFL 25 is like most other games in the franchise. It will be released on August 16, 2024. While earlier games in the franchise would launch in September-November, it wasn’t until Madden NFL 98 that the games started having a hard August release date.

Launching the games in August makes sense. Since football fans have to wait until after Labor Day for the NFL season to start, a new Madden game every August helps them get their pro football kick till then. The last time a National Football League season didn’t start in September was the 97-98 season which started on August 31, 1997, one day before Labor Day.

Madden NFL 25(2024)Cover Athlete

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey will grace NFL fans as the cover athlete this year for Madden NFL 25. McCaffrey won the AP Offensive Player of the Year Award for his performance in the 2023 NFL season.

McCaffrey, who first started playing for the Carolina Panthers back in 2017, was traded to the 49ers which saw them give the Panthers their 2023 second, third, and fourth-round picks as well as their fifth-round pick for the 2024 NFL draft. McCaffrey helped get the San Francisco 49ers to the 2024 Super Bowl and while they lost to the Patrick Mahomes-led Kansas City Chiefs, it’s still an achievement just being able to get there.

Madden NFL 2001 was the first game in the franchise to start using cover athletes. The other games before it showcased John Madden on the cover. The legendary coach would again grace the cover of Madden NFL 23 to honor him due to his passing in late 2021.

Gameplay And Features

The newest Madden game will have a slew of updated gameplay and features such as brand-new role-playing elements, and better modeling which will improve hitting, tackling, and running as well. BOOM Tech is another new feature that will be coming to the game as well as an improvement to the pass blocking aim.

The game will feature new animations for catching and will presumably feature new animations across the board as well. BOOM Tech will act as a new physics-based tackling system that will improve realism and control when tackling. FieldSENSE will also be getting an improvement as well. I’ll be honest, these all sound like pretty gimmicky marketing words for “Football game that plays like a football game”.

Madden NFL 25 will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and PC. You can pre-order it here.
