Spider-Man is a classic pop culture icon. He’s got to be one of the most popular, and influential fictional characters of all time. He’s awesome, and he’s been an awesome character since he was first introduced all the way back in 1962. Spider-Man has had a ton of different media franchises, spanning from media like comics, television, movies, and video games.
One of the most popular video game series he has been a part of has been the Spider-Man games on the PS4 and PS5. These games have been written and developed by Insomniac Games. Insomniac is known for making classic PlayStation series like Spyro the Dragon and Ratchet and Clank. They’re great developers, and for their next entry in their Spidey franchise, they can go pretty much anywhere. I’ll throw my hat in the ring here and talk about where I believe they should go with their universe.
Keep (Peter Parker) Spider-Man the focus
If you ask me, I believe the first Spidey game by Insomniac was overall a better game than both the Miles Morales game, and the sequel. Those two are great, but the original knew what to do. The original game had a focus on Peter and his balance of both his personal life and his superhero life. It was great because it made for some relatable, yet heart-wrenching drama in that first installment.
Miles is a cool character, but in the sequel, he honestly bogged down the story a bit. You can tell the writers bit off more than they could chew since Miles felt out of place in the story. Peter and Harry’s friendship was so important in the sequel, but it felt like Miles was just there. For the third installment, Insomniac should keep focusing on Peter and his personal life, since he can carry a game better than Miles in my opinion. I like Miles don’t get me wrong, but Peter is the original web head.
Expand on Spider-Man’s Combat More
The combat in all of these games is really fun and unique. You can tell Insomniac used a lot of their experience from the Ratchet and Clank games, since these games have tons of gadgets and customizability in using them. While the combat and traversal are great, I wish there were more additions to these system mechanics in Spider-Man 2. There were a good amount of slight changes.
But there weren’t enough major ones. The combat felt like a lot of the same honestly. While new abilities being introduced were fun, I feel like leaving the gadgets behind from the first game added a lot less depth to the combat. It makes for a visually fun system, but not as complex. In the third game, they should drastically overhaul both the swinging and the combat, so it feels like a new game, instead of just an expansion.
Change Spider-Man’s Story
Alright, I’m not saying change the foundation too much or anything like that. What made the first game’s story so much fun was how it was similar to the comics, but had some slight changes. The problem now with the Insomniac games is how they’re sticking to a formula. In all three of the games so far, the main villain has been a friend to the main Spidey.
This worked great in the first game with Doc Ock. In the spin-off, the Tinkerer felt like a lesser version of this. In the sequel, Venom was cool, but it was the same deal. The story feels kind of been there and done that. For the third game, there are so many villains Insomniac can go with, like the Green Goblin. I’m fine with that, but I think they should stop doing the whole “mentor or friend turned evil” shtick. It’s a bit old. I’m very excited about where this series can go from here. The future is bright, let’s hope they deliver.
