Depending on how you play Dragon Age: Origins, Oghren is a character that you can recruit somewhat early in the game or late in the game with how you traverse the story. There’s a chance you may not be able to recruit Oghren at all depending on your story and dialog choices. Even though he’s only been in one full game and an expansion, Oghren is a pretty memorable character if a little over the top at times.
Oghren In Dragon Age: Origins
In Dragon Age: Origins, Oghren is a Dwarven character you can meet and then later recruit in the Dwarven kingdom of Orzammar. He’s part of the Warrior caste of Orzammar and was a generational talent when it came to fighting. Even though he was more interested in a dwarf named Felsi, Oghren would instead marry Branka from the Smith caste who would later go on to become a Paragon of Orzammar. Dwarves in Dragon Age don’t worship any gods but instead revere their ancestors and living Paragons such as what Branka becomes are seen as individuals with the wisdom of the Dwarven ancestors.
Due to becoming a Paragon, Branka founded a noble house which absorbed Oghren’s house as well. Eventually, Branka starts an expedition into the Deep Roads and leaves Oghren behind due to the bad blood that developed between them during their marriage. Oghren had become a drunkard during their marriage and after being left behind, started to drink even more. He also became a womanizer and tried starting things up again with Felsi but seeing what Oghren had become, broke things off with him soon after. He was eventually stripped of his weapons after killing a lord in a non-death match which brought even more shame to him.
Oghren is tied to the ‘A Paragon of Her Kind‘ main questline which the player needs to complete to get the help of the Dwarves against the Darkspawn. The player can try and question him while he’s getting drunk in a tavern but he won’t be cooperative, instead thinking the warden isn’t genuine in wanting to find Branka. Eventually, when the player begins their adventure into the Deep Roads, Oghren will stop them and say he wants to come along to try and find his wife.
Oghren will come to find out that Branka had started cheating on him with his cousin Hespith and that all 300 members of the people she took with them were killed with Branka being the only survivor. Being a Bioware game, Dragon Age: Origins allows you to either side with Branka who is the evil choice, or take the good choice instead. While he doesn’t want to fight Branka, he won’t stop the player from doing so when he sees how obsessed his wife has become with finding the Anvil of the Void. No matter which you choose though, players will complete the quest. He also has a companion quest.
Oghren in Dragon Age: Awakening And Sequels
Players can encounter the red-headed Dwarf again in the expansion, Dragon Age: Awakening which sees the players trying to rebuild the Grey Wardens in Ferelden. In Dragon Age: Awakening, he is encountered pretty early on at Vigil’s Keep fighting Darkspawn and can also join the Grey Wardens this time around. In the expansion, it’s revealed he and Felsi got back together but then split up again due to Oghren going back to drinking. With the help of the Warden, he and Felsi can either get back together or split up for good.
So far though, Oghren hasn’t appeared in any other sequels besides being mentioned in the book Dragon Age: Asunder and the book Dragon Age: The World of Thedas. While the companions have already been revealed for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, I’d love to see Oghren make an appearance in the sequel just to know if he and Felsi are doing ok or not. Seeing as how he hasn’t been in any of the other Dragon Age sequels besides an expansion, I’m not holding my breath.
