What’s the best gaming franchise of all time? It’s a tough question to ask, and maybe an impossible one to answer. It’s easy to posit many game series here at the front. Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Grand Theft Auto, and so many more. If it were me, I would easily place Final Fantasy in that number-one spot.
Final Fantasy has got to be one of the most popular role-playing game series of all time. It’s up there with Dragon Quest and Baldur’s Gate as some of the all-time classic RPG series. Final Fantasy is pretty definitive as a series I would argue for many reasons. This series really has it all, and the fact that it started all the way back in 1986 is just insane to me. Let me list some of the reasons why this series is so legendary.
Final Fantasy has Incredible Stories
Final Fantasy is known for many things, but its storytelling is one of them. These games are known for having great stories and even greater characters. I love so many of this game’s stories. They’re written incredibly well, and have some of gaming’s most iconic and popular characters. Ever since Final Fantasy 4, character writing and develop was taken seriously by the writing team, and it’s been uphill ever since.
The characters in these games too are so lovable and charismatic. Final Fantasy is a series about a ton of different people coming together to fight a common enemy, and this tried and true formula is so iterative. Every game in the series feels similar, yet different, and the cast of characters is the heart and soul of each game. Look at the older games in the series, and you’ll find characters gamers have loved for years.
Final Fantasy’s Gameplay is Ever-Evolving
If there’s one thing that is controversial about the series, it has got to be the gameplay. Final Fantasy started out as a turn-based role-playing game, and has been for decades. There were some spin off games that altered gameplay a bit, but it wasn’t until the fifteenth entry, back in 2016, where the game series took it’s transition to the next level. FF15 was a fully-fledged action RPG, and FF16 was the same.
With the FF7 Remake games, they found this perfect blend of being real time action, with elements of turn based. It’s quite ingenious honestly, and really fun to play to boot. The series is ever-changing, and this has led to discussion. Should Final Fantasy stay the same? Should it change drastically? It’s an interesting conversation to have, but there is no shortage of variety in this game series, and that is invaluable.
Final Fantasy’s Music is Second to None
One element of the game series that I don’t hear get mentioned enough is the music. Final Fantasy has had a stellar soundtrack ever since the first game in the series. With tracks like the overworld theme, and the prelude title screen theme being instantly iconic. This game series’ soundtrack is done by Nobuo Uematsu. He is a legendary video game composer.
He’s done the soundtrack of every mainline FF game from the first game to the tenth. He even contributed one or two tracks to the twelfth game. Every game has incredibly music in the series, and that is thanks to Uematsu but also the talented teams who created these worlds. Final Fantasy is a vast series with stories so deep and intricate, you could play them for seemingly ever. For my money, it’s the best game series of all time.
