Why Star Wars: KOTOR Should Have Never Left

KOTOR Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic

In 2003, RPG geniuses BioWare released KOTOR (Knights of the Old Republic) for the Star Wars universe. To this day, fans herald the game as one of the best Western RPGs and the Star Wars franchise for its stellar writing and gameplay. However, the game has been deemed non-canon since Disney bought the franchise.

Over two decades later, gamers still play, discuss, and praise the classic CRPG. Due to this, many Warsians across the internet want to see the game return to the canon in one way or another. Here is a rundown of why Knights of the Old Republic should become part of the Galaxy’s lore again.

It is an Amazing Game

The first reason Disney should not have abandoned KOTOR is that it was just a stellar game overall. Before they gave gamers the acclaimed Mass Effect and Dragon Age series, BioWare created KOTOR. What made the game work so well was how it integrated the force, lightsabers, and blasters—the iconic weapons of the series—into a proper RPG.

Years before the Paragon and Renegade system of Mass Effect, this game allowed players to choose between the Dark and Light Side of the Force. Given that this was such a central element of the franchise, this game turned the conflict into a proper gameplay and story mechanic that divided players over whether it was right to stick to one’s principles or seek power. At the very least, players live out a power fantasy of being an honored Jedi or vicious Sith.

Finally, the game gave players a fantastic story. Set millennia before the Battle of Yavin, the story followed the Republic and Sith Empires at their heights and showcased what both were capable of in their respective days. It added a scale to the galaxy that made even the movies feel like a footnote. To this day, the story has one of the most famous plot twists in all gaming.

It Has Vital Star Wars Lore

The next major reason to bring the game back is its contributions to the lore. When Disney bought the franchise, they decreed that everything except the movies and Clone Wars was not canon. This erased thousands of years of vital history and hundreds of fantastic works. This is especially egregious given the number of amazing stories sequestered within the histories of the Galaxy. Throughout the Clone Wars series, there were also a surprising number of Easter Eggs in the franchise, such as the Selkath, so its return would bring back the context.

As stated above, KOTOR is a video game that lets players explore dozens of planets and read volumes of lore. As such, it would be the perfect opportunity for Star Wars to flesh out its galaxy. Virtually all of their works were set in the era of the Galactic Empire, so this game would do wonders. Furthermore, with the recent cancellation of The Acolyte, this would tell a proper story of the lore behind the Jedi and Sith’s conflict.

KOTOR Gave Some of the Most Iconic Characters

Finally, as with any great RPG, the game offered a roster of iconic player characters and villains. From your party, there was the Mandalorian Canderous, Master Bastille Shan, pilot Mission Vao, and the hilariously psychotic HK-47.  The game and its sequel also introduced iconic villains, such as the menacing Darth Nihilus and the profound Kreia. The modern writers have proven their ability to revive these classic characters through shows such as Rebels.

Of course, the best example from the game would have to be the iconic Darth Revan. In the days of Legends, before Disney bought the franchise, many legendary Jedi and Sith Lords ruled the galaxy in ages past. One of the most iconic would have to be Darth Revan. With their complex story, amazing prowess, and iconic mask, fans have begged Disney to bring them back for ages.

While Star Wars under Disney remains fairly controversial, few fans wouldn’t celebrate the figure’s return, which once came to fruition through a deleted scene from The Clone Wars. Overall, the Knights of the Old Republic game remains one of the best gems of the Star Wars franchise, and it is one that Disney would be wise to revive.
