Why You Should Own A Limited Edition Sega Genesis Mini 2

Since 1989, the Sega Genesis (the Mega Drive in Japan) has gifted us Mario’s rival, Sonic the Hedgehog. Using the power of a 16-bit processor instead of the 8-bit the Nintendo Entertainment System used, games were displayed in colorful palettes, addictive music fonts, and like Sonic, ran at faster frames. While Sega no longer makes gaming consoles, they still care for the community who grew up with the Genesis by releasing the Sega Genesis Mini in 2016. Yet, its second generation, the Sega Genesis Mini 2 offers more variety.

What Sega Genesis Mini 2 Offers

The original Sega Genesis Mini offered 42 original games emulated by M2 and upgraded the console to play with USB Genesis controllers with a control pad and 3 action buttons. The Genesis Mini is modeled after the original to give fans and console collectors a sense of nostalgia for the early 90s. Now with an HDMI cable, players can play classic Genesis games on modern televisions. In Japan, the Mega Drive came with a Mega CD Drive attachment to play Sega 32X and Sega CD games.

The Sega Genesis Mini 2 is modeled after the Genesis Core System. Not only does the console include 60 Genesis games. The system also offers Sega CD games, arcade titles, and exclusive games region-locked in Japan. The controllers are modeled after the Genesis Core System’s round compact design and 6 buttons. The Sega Genesis Mini 2 can also be played with a Sega Genesis Mini controller.

Lightweight and Space Saving

If you are searching for a collectible game console, consider how much space and the sturdiness of your TV Shelf. Most next-gen consoles vary in size and weight with the PS5 being the largest. The console takes up a large space measuring 11 inches long by 15 inches wide and weighs about 9 lbs, causing shelf boards to bend if not placed on the upper board. The Nintendo Switch with the charger HDMI dock has a versatile design weighing 2.25 lbs and space-saving measuring 9.40 inches wide by 4.01 inches tall.

The Sega Genesis Mini 2 is a perfect shelf console. Compared to the original, the console measures 5.12 inches wide by 3.43 tall. It can fit in both hands making it convenient to carry if you are moving to a new residence or rearranging your room. It’s also very light, weighing 3.31 lbs. This is another good reason to have one.

Display, Controller, And Processing Power

The US Version of the Sega Genesis Mini 2 UI is not as exciting to explore the game library. The original Sega Genesis Mini had a lovely jingle with a sleek UI design and included three customizable wallpapers that matched Sonic’s blue fur. The Sega Genesis Mini 2’s UI is more rounded and doesn’t have the same excitement. The Japanese version has a colorful wallpaper that will remind players of Sonic Mania with an upbeat jingle.

Switching between the HD and CRTV is jarring. The CRTV mode is clearer than its predecessor. Processing power is pretty good as well. The Sega Genesis Mini 2 handles the arcade games and the Sega CD games very well. The controller takes some time to get used to due to its awkward round handles. Overall, the system runs fantastically.

Where To Buy

On the official Sega Japan’s Genesis Mini 2 page, the gaming console is an Amazon-exclusive item. In the US and parts of Europe, you can order the Sega Genesis Mini 2 regularly for the US version. If you live in Canada and Japan, you will need a separate registration link. Japan’s version comes with the Genesis Core System comes with its Mega CD Drive for nostalgic Japanese Genesis fans. However, at this time it is currently unavailable.
