Will There Ever Be An Impressive Super Mario Odyssey 2?

Mario

Super Mario Odyssey 2 is something Nintendo gamers have been begging for since 2017. When the first game debuted, it impressed the community so much that they immediately began hoping for a sequel. A 3D Mario game is absolutely coming at some point, but a sequel to an existing title in that section of this franchise is pretty rare. That hasn’t stopped people from hoping, though.

There has been very little chatter on the future of 3D Mario since Super Mario Odyssey came out almost seven years ago. In that span, there hasn’t been a lot of action in the Mario franchise in general. There have been a few titles in various sectors, such as Paper Mario and the Origami King or Super Mario Maker 2. Will there be a Super Mario Odyssey 2?

What We Know About Super Mario Odyssey 2

Unfortunately, Nintendo has been very quiet about any potential sequel to Super Mario Odyssey, but it seems very unlikely that they’d skip out on a sequel. It is already one of their most beloved games, and it’s a 3D title that has almost universal acclaim. Any second game in the same vein would be a massive success, and Nintendo certainly loves to make money.

After Super Mario Bros. Wonder‘s impressive success, the next 3D game should be on the way. With the Switch 2 coming sooner rather than later, it is the perfect time for an Odyssey sequel. The original Switch didn’t debut with a Mario 3D game in hand, as it came a few months later. But given how long it’s been without one (and with even more time before the Switch 2 hits shelves), there’s been plenty of time to Super Mario Odyssey 2.

Nintendo generally keeps things close to the chest, but the community is all but convinced that a sequel is coming. Super Mario Odyssey 2 would presumably be one of the best-selling games in this franchise, and that’s saying something. Every aspect of the game was a huge hit with fans, and doubling down in new worlds would be an easy but foolproof formula to implement for a sequel.

Sequels to 3D Mario Games Are Rare

Just once has a true 3D Mario game been given a sequel, and that was Super Mario Galaxy. Neither Super Mario 64 nor Super Mario Sunshine, the other major, fully 3D games, got a sequel. There have been other 3D-esque games like Super Mario 3D Land, but playing that game is very different from the others mentioned here. If Super Mario Odyssey does get given a sequel, it would be a rarity.

Something in the 3D world is coming soon. Nintendo has often focused on one style and then the other, but it’s coming. Recently, the 2D style has had more time in the limelight, so 3D’s time is coming. Whether or not it will be a successor to Odyssey remains to be seen, but it will follow that same style: a large, open-world style game in 3D with stars or moons or something else to collect en masse. Super Mario Odyssey 2 would make for an epic announcement from Nintendo, but that might not happen for a while as they gear up for the next console.
