Wizards of the Coast’s (WoTC) most iconic property, Dungeons and Dragons, is getting a whole new revamp to everything that is D&D. Releasing on September 17th and November 12th, respectively, the 2024 version of the Players Handbook and DM’s Guide will feature updated content or every aspect of the tabletop RPG. Including, but not limited to, new spells, mechanics, classes and subclasses, weapons, feats, character options, backgrounds, and more. All with the hopes of streamlining the play process and making the system easily accessible to all players.
The Player’s Handbook
Dubbed “A complete reimagining of the books,” the creators at WoTC have taken a page from every player’s wish list: Include a full breakdown of how to play the game in simple terms that anyone can understand. So that players, both new and veterans alike, can jump right in and start playing the game without much fuss; all while bridging that gap of understanding between the players and their DMs – that often leaves players feeling a little lost.
Weapons and skill sets are also among the changes. One of the examples offered to players, ahead of the PHB release, is more details on the mechanics for the “Weapon Mastery” ability. WoTC creators went on record attesting to their desire to make weapon-focused characters; like Rangers, Rogues, Barbarians, and Fighters; feel more well-rounded by giving their builds a more tactical approach to combat gameplay. While also maintaining the synergistic balance that all characters must have to work well with their fellow party members.
Aside from more technical and mechanical changes to spells, combat, and characters, the 2024 Players Handbook will also include an exclusive addition not before released in previous iterations: an in-depth Rules Glossary. Alphabetized for players’ convenience, the addition covers everything from character alignment, backgrounds, and even currency, to more complicated situations revolving around status effects, conditions, specialty circumstances, and combat mechanics -that often confuse many players.
The DM’s Guide
A top-to-bottom rewrite of the 2014 version, the new Dungeon Master’s Guide will boast some of the most helpful advice for aspiring and veteran DMs. Covering everything from the bare-bones basics of gameplay and character creation to the most complicated aspects of the game’s combat and lore: the guide will offer players a clear and concise overview of how to run their games. While also focusing on structure, rule sets, and general advice for every adventure, big and small.
While many of the changes to the DMs guide are still being kept under wraps, some tidbits of information have been disseminated to players to engage more interest in the new editions. One such highlight: the details mentioned by Senior Story Designer Chris Perkins (of Acquisitions Incorporated fame,) wherein he discussed the in-depth nature of the Treasures section of the new guide. He noted that the section, alone, is nearly one hundred pages of carefully selected and fine-tuned magical artifacts and weapons just waiting to be claimed by players.
Upcoming Releases
Aside from the D&D player’s handbook and the DMs Guide, WoTC will also release a newer version of the final book in the core set: The Monster Manual, on February 18, 2025. The 384-page book has been said to be the most monster-packed edition ever put to print. With a huge variety of monsters, both big and small, and in every flavor combination a player can think of the manual will include full stat blocks, abilities, and special conditions and aspects of each monster -as well as additional information relative to each creature.
