Keeping track of the lore in World of Warcraft can be a full-time job. Each expansion features many major characters, both new and returning. With the RTS games adding history dating back to the 1990s, many players don’t know the finer details. Thankfully, Blizzard is working to get players up to speed on the major players in WoW The War Within. With the expansion release drawing painfully close, promotional material excites everyone. With that in mind, let’s look at Blizzard’s work with Alleria Windrunner and think about where her character is headed.
WoW’s Original Elf
To promote WoW The War Within, Blizzard has recently given us an epic animated short about Alleria. The short quickly elides through her history, retelling tales from Warcraft’s many installments. Her history begins back in the days of Warcraft II, when additional races beyond Humans and Orcs were introduced. She was a High Elf archer, who joined the Alliance to fight back against the invading Horde. This put a strain on her relationship with her sister, Sylvanas, who stayed in their homeland to protect it. While Alleria cared about the Elven kingdom of Quel’thalas, she knew the world would fall if the Horde wasn’t stopped.
During the war, Alleria fell in love with the Paladin Turalyon. They had a child together, Arator, but the family would not be together long. Alleria and Turalyon pursued the Orcs to their homeland, another planet called Draenor. When the planet was on the brink of destruction, the two stayed behind to give their allies the best fighting chance possible. Presumed dead, Arator would be raised by his aunt Vereesa. However, unbeknownst to those on Azeroth, Alleria and Turalyon yet lived. They learned of the cosmic battle against the Burning Legion, and they joined with an interstellar army to fight back.
Alleria Windrunner and the Void
While Alleria had ostensibly joined the Army of the Light with her husband Turalyon, she would find a different path. The shadowy whispers of the Void found their way to Alleria, and in a moment of absolute danger, it would save her. While Turalyon feared he had lost his wife to the ways of the Void, Alleria was still herself. Despite the mistrust her new allies had for this power, she swore to use it to defeat their enemies. Time dilation between Azeroth and the rest of the cosmos meant Alleria experienced a thousand years of conflict with her husband, while only a few decades passed on Azeroth.
When the Burning Legion invaded Azeroth, the heroes there found their way to Alleria and Turalyon. They were reunited with their son Arator, now a grown man and a Paladin like his father. As they brought the fight to the Legion homeworld of Argus, Alleria would follow the path of her new teacher. A Void-wielding being named Locus-Walker would teach Alleria more about her powers. She would defeat a powerful entity that had fallen to the Void and absorb its excess power, granting her a powerful Void transformation. With this, she would aid in the ultimate defeat of the Legion and return to Azeroth with her family.
Unhappy Reunions
While Alleria was fighting a cosmic war, her family had experienced much in her absence. Her eldest sister Sylvanas had fallen to undeath and was a specter of her former self. Vereesa had lost her husband and raised her sons alone. The Alliance and the Horde once again fell to conflict and Turalyon stood steadfastly with his people. Alleria’s High Elves had largely been destroyed by the Scourge, and most remnants were now Blood Elves of the Horde. She had no home, and her family did not trust the Void whispers in her head. Despite this, she supported her husband and welcomed the Void Elves into the Alliance.
When Sylvanas turned against the living and sought to aid the Jailer Zovaal in the destruction of the known world, Alleria tried to hold things together on Azeroth. She would see her sister banished, her family still not whole. Despite efforts to unite with her old people, the Void left her a pariah. However, her expertise was essential as a new Void entity, Xal’atath, became the major threat to Azeroth’s stability. Teaming up with her old allies and the players of WoW, Alleria is set to be a major player in WoW The War Within as the Void takes center stage as a major antagonist.
Looking Ahead to The War Within
WoW The War Within is the beginning of the Worldsoul Saga. In the animation, Alleria discusses her role as an eternal soldier. She only knows war, and the mistrust others have for her will not stop her from fighting when she feels she must. As others hear the radiant song from within Azeroth, Alleria hears only the Void’s temptations. Some worry she will fall and become a villain. Perhaps she will instead sacrifice herself before that. Should she lose her son Arator, the one who keeps her steady, it’s unsure what she will do. Whether she’s doomed to die a hero or live as a villain, Alleria’s legacy makes her perhaps the most compelling protagonist WoW has put into play.
