Having already broken the record for pre-sales on Steam, at 53 million dollars, China’s first triple-A foray into the RPG industry has garnered the attention of fans and gamers alike. Developed by Game Science and backed by China’s biggest publisher, Tencent, Black Myth: Wukong launched on Tuesday, August 20th, and became an instant global success. Selling over 4.5 million copies across all platforms; the game hit a peak concurrent users (PCCU) rank on Steam at over 2.2 million players worldwide on day 1. Grossing over 210 million dollars in sales so far, it has surpassed even Cyberpunk 2077 as Steam’s most-played single-player game ever.
The Game
Starting sometime after the original cultural classic, Journey to the West, players are first given the premise: the tale of the titular Monkey King’s rejection of immortality and the ensuing conflict with the gods for his disobedience, which, eventually turns him to stone. They then take on the role of the destined one as they travel across vast locations; heavily inspired by Chinese cultural and natural landmarks; in search of the pieces of Wukong’s power he managed to scatter before he was defeated and entombed. It will be up to the player to collect these “six senses” (based on the Buddhist philosophy of Āyatana) and free him.
The History
The story of the legendary Sun Wukong’s life and his interactions with the protagonist monk Tang Sanzang have been circulating in oral form since the 1100s and was eventually started to be put in print during the Southern Song Dynasty, nearly nine centuries ago. Over the years, the story has been found and told in various iterations, across China, and has been cited as one of the most foundational fictional stories in history. The epic adventure has inspired many artistic works throughout the centuries, from plays and books to movies, various dònghuà (Chinese anime,) and games.
The Reaction to Black Myth: Wukong
Gamers and fans have already been praising Black Myth: Wukong for its story and graphics. And speaking with such zeal, about how the game feels immersive and all-encompassing from the very start; and how they feel drawn into the game from the very first scene.
