Have you ever heard this soul-searching question? You wash up on a deserted island alone. Sitting on the sand is a box. What is in that box? What if there is just a simple letter in the box—the letter X?
Xbox has been with us since 2001 and changed the gaming scene forever. When the Xbox came out, it began the console wars and meant a world of change. When it first came out, it was one of the most successful console sales in history, with more than 1 million just after three weeks and another .5 million in the next month. What has happened since that time?
Generations of Family Fun
The first generation of Xbox emerged during a challenging period, competing against the Sony PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo GameCube. However, it managed to stand out, thanks partly to its exclusive, top-rated games like Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic, and most notably, Halo. This game became synonymous with the console, introducing players to the iconic character, Master Chief.
The next generation console, the Xbox 360, was released in 2005, the same year as the PlayStation 3 and Sega’s exit from the console market. It introduced popular games like Gears of War and Dead Rising, as well as innovative features like the Xbox Live service and the Kinect.
The third Xbox was the Xbox One S and X. This came with 4K graphics, internal networking to limit lag and performance gaps, and a Kinect system to boot. The console war waged as this one also came out with the PlayStation 4. There was a cost difference between the two this time, which affected the sales.
The Latest Generation is the Xbox Series X/S
This one has changed the way we play beyond anything released before. It has done massively well, partly due to a marketing shortage for the PlayStation 5. This Xbox performed 8K with 120fps for almost all its games.
This one was called the PC-Gaming Killer at a more affordable price. Not only were its graphics amazing, but it almost cut the loading time in half from its predecessors. Not only were the insides of this Xbox different but it looked different. Its dark tower frame with vents abandoned the flat cube shape of its ancestors.
The Series X, however, kept its traditional look but provided a lighter, more compact experience for its players at a more affordable price. It has a clean white finish.
What will Xbox have for us in the future?
In just a few months, Microsoft is planning on releasing a cheaper, disc-free version of the Xbox Series X. It is said to have a white finish without an optical disk drive, an upgraded heatsink, and a Nexus Card.
The next model is also scheduled to come out in four more years, and maybe it will be the next artillery piece in the console War. As of this current situation between them and PlayStation, Xbox is slightly ahead of them in raw power, design, and backward compatibility. The question is, can Xbox keep it up, and what will happen in the meantime?
