Xbox Drops a Chilling, Thrilling Gears of War: E-Day Teaser

It’s time to go back to the “mad world” of Sera. On June 10, Xbox dropped the official teaser trailer for the latest game in the Gears of War franchise. Entitled E-Day, the next-gen video game takes us back to Emergence Day- the event in which the ferocious Locust horde first unleashed their wrath on the civilians of Sera.

Gears of War: E-Day will take place 14 years before the events of the first Gears of War game and once again stars our favorite scruffy, gruff-voiced Gear Marcus Fenix.  Since Netflix has not provided any plans or updates for their live-action film and animated series, this game will be the closest thing to new Gears content for now. At the moment, the only confirmed news of the projects is that Jon Spaiths- the acclaimed screenwriter for the first Doctor Strange movie and co-writer of Denis Villeneuve’s two Dune films- was brought on to write the film.

The E-Day teaser opens with Fenix, as usual, in the middle of a tough day on the job. An encounter takes place between him and one of the Locusts, commonly referred to by Gear soldiers as grubs. The grub nearly gets the edge before Fenix brandishes him with his custom lancer, equipped with a bayonet this time around rather than his trademark chainsaw.

However, Marcus gains the upper hand and beheads the grub in time. As the floor starts to give out and he almost plummets to what looks like the gates of Hell, an arm reaches out and we’re reintroduced to a younger Dominic Santiago. Cue the waterworks. Dom was one of Fenix’s brothers-in-arms who gave his own life to ensure Marcus and the rest of their infantry would survive.

Xbox interviewed the Coalition, the team of developers that have worked on the Gears of War franchise since the release of the ultimate edition in 2015. Creative director Matt Searcy spoke openly about the team’s main goal. “It’s us revisiting the tone and the feeling of what makes Gears great, but we’re tapping into new techniques, new processes, and new technology that’s going to make the gameplay feel better than ever,” Searcy said.  “It’s going to be awesome, a game that feels both truly new and authentically Gears.” Fan reactions to the teaser were mostly positive. On X, @kelskiYT wrote, “Seeing Dom again almost made me tear up bruh”.  The official X for Las Vegas’ esports team the Las Vegas Inferno shared that they were elated, stating “Gears is back!!!” @www_ill_iam boldly chimed in and stated “Thank you so much. Please don’t fumble this. The true fans are excited.”

Where the Netflix Movies & Series Could Go

It’s hard to tell where the streaming giant plans to go with its untitled shows and movie as all of the details are currently under wraps. However, if there was a story they could go with, either E-Day or the first Gears of War game is ripe for potential. The first game takes place just as the Locusts have started to overtake much of Sera and Marcus is reinstated in the military after his imprisonment for abandoning his post.

Fenix’s reason for abandoning his post was in an attempt to save his father. This is a universal touching plot point about protecting one’s family that could serve as an optimal starting point for audiences to wrap their heads around the central human vs. horde conflict that the games primarily cover. However, throwing viewers headfirst into the fray and action of the world and starting the adaptations with little to no backstory on the characters and the world of Sera itself could complement the brutality and harshness of Gears of War itself. The filmmakers will be able to stretch out the length of material they can adapt over multiple seasons or follow-up installments if everything goes well during the production. The choices are relatively endless.
