The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is out very soon. Ever since it was initially announced, fans speculated immediately where it might fall on the notoriously convoluted Zelda timeline. Each game, technically speaking, has a place on it, even if it largely makes no sense. With every new game, the timeline seems to get even more confusing. With the game not out just yet, we don’t know all the story details or world details that might give a clue as to its placement. The producers behind the game have, however, revealed the challenges they find in making new games fit into the timeline.
Echoes of Wisdom Producers Talk Zelda Timeline
For the better part of the Zelda franchise’s shelf life, there was no timeline. These stories just existed in the same fictional universe with little connecting features. However, as time went on, players began to wonder how Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf kept showing back up without much acknowledgment of their previous adventures. So Nintendo made Skyward Sword and set out to detail the convoluted and seemingly ever-changing Zelda timeline. Now, the producing team behind Echoes of Wisdom has their take on it. Spoiler alert, they find it rather difficult to adhere to.
“These days, even for us, it’s not easy to touch on the lore of the Legend of Zelda series,” series producer Eiji Aonuma said. “When you address the history of the Legend of Zelda, you naturally have to be conscious of how things have been expressed previously in the series. With that said, when Aonuma and company think about a new title, “the scope of what you can do becomes increasingly narrow,” said the producer. “On top of that, because the series has been running for a long time, players are interested in its history and lore,” he went on.
Eiji Aonuma Opens Up on Zelda Timeline Constraints
Eiji Aonuma is finding it more and more challenging to place games on the Zelda timeline. This may be why a recent change was made indicating that Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are in their own separate timeline. Aonuma said, “So when we’ve adopted a game plot that was not in line with the other games in the series because we prioritized the gameplay, we’ve been told by our fans that it didn’t make sense. We realized that even if the developers didn’t intend to make nonsensical changes, players could interpret otherwise.”
The producer revealed that they had no interest in establishing any new theories regarding the lore or history. “Link goes on an adventure every time and experiences many things. But Princess Zelda has always had to take a step back in the Legend of Zelda series,” he said. “But this time, Princess Zelda is on her own adventure, so the story takes on a different perspective than before. I think that’s why we were able to create something new in terms of the story as well.” The timeline matters, but not as much as making a good game. With so many restrictions on that, it’s easy to see why Nintendo might have foregone that aspect of these new games.
In Conclusion
Since the timeline, which involved a few branches and a convergence that may or may not even be accurate anymore, is so intricate and layered anyway, it doesn’t make much sense to try and place each game on one. These are considered legends, which means they’re stories passed down through families in Hyrule for generations, so they don’t have to be extremely accurate or connected. That seems to be what the modern producing team has decided when it comes to Echoes of Wisdom and the Zelda timeline.
