Assassin’s Creed fans have long awaited Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the newest installment in the Ubisoft series. The game was set to release in November of this year and has had multiple trailer releases, with the most recent world trailer coming out on September 11th. Recently, Ubisoft announced that the game will be delayed until 2025. Here’s everything we know.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows was highly anticipated, with Ubisoft promising to return to the game’s beginnings and prioritize stealth more. The game occurs in feudal Japan and follows dual protagonists Yasuke and Fujibayashi Naoe. Fans were excited due to the incredible trailers that Ubisoft released, which showed how much work they put into capturing the beauty of Japan.

While fans were looking forward to Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ scenery, they also looked forward to seeing Yasuke and Naoe come alive in the game. Yasuke, being based on a real Japanese historical figure, a samurai that not much is known about, intrigued many, drawing attention to the game. While Naoe isn’t based on a historical figure, her father is. Fujibayashi Nagato was a legendary Shinobi who was trained in the way of the ninja. These things tie both Yasuke and Naoe in with true Japanese history.

Shadows Delayed

Assassin’s Creed Shadows was set to release on November 12th, 2024, but Ubisoft announced that it would be delayed until February. Shadows are now given a Valentine’s Day release date: February 14th, 2025. In a message to players, Ubisoft said, “Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a dream project for us; finally bringing the series to Feudal Japan with many features developed with our community in mind, such as parkour, or the renewed stealth, brought by new technology, all set in a beautiful and immersive world.”

They continued, “As such, we’ve decided to postpone the release date to February 14, 2025. The game will be released on various platforms, including Steam at launch. Additionally, preorders will be refunded, and all future preorders will be granted the first free expansion. We understand this decision will be disappointing, especially to those waiting patiently for an Assassin’s Creed game inspired by Feudal Japan. Still, we sincerely believe this is in the game’s best interest and, ultimately, your experience as a player.”

Final Thoughts

Many fans are incredibly disappointed by the delay of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. They never expect it to get pushed back, especially not that far. It’s unknown when preorders will reopen, but Ubisoft apologizing in the form of the first expansion pack is a nice form of apology. Within the gut-wrenching announcement, they also announced that Shadows would launch on Steam, signifying the end of Ubisoft’s exclusivity contract with the Epic Games store. This contract allowed all Ubisoft games to be released on the Epic Games store first before being released on Steam later. Though, sadly, gamers will have to wait for Shadows, at least Steam users can get the game on PC.
