Deadlock: Ultimate McGinnis Hero Item Build

McGinnis

McGinnis is a great fit for a defensive playstyle in Deadlock, one where a kit focuses on building up strength over time. Her abilities have to do with defense and support, making her a great pick for players who enjoy strategizing late game. Turrets for area-of-effect control, healing, and a barrier make McGinnis quite valuable on the battlefield.

Key Stats:

Base Health: 550
Damage Per Second (DPS): 80
Ammo Capacity: 66
While McGinnis is not the smartest in direct combat during earlier parts of the game, her scaling throughout the match does tend to be good. Later in the game, her Mini Turrets and Spectral Wall become keystones for control and assisting teammates.

McGinnis’ Abilities:

Mini Turret

Deploy a self-operating turret that attacks at a regular, steady clip.
Stats: Gains 30% of McGinnis’ max health and 60% Spirit Resist.
Best to be used in areas of control and enemy distraction.

Medicinal Specter

Creates a healing area that heals McGinnis and his nearby allies.
Healing: 25 HP/second for 6 seconds.
Optimal for sustaining yourself and your team during drawn-out gunfights.

Spectral Wall

Casts a wall of defense blocking the enemies’ line of sight and slowing their movements.
Excellent for cutting off the advances of enemies and holding defensive positions.

Heavy Barrage (Ultimate)

Launches a salvo of rockets dealing significant AoE damage.
Damage: 30 damage per second for 13 seconds.
This ability is used when you have secured the surroundings since it restricts McGinnis’ movements, but the reward in terms of damage is handsome.

How to Play:

McGinnis does wonders in those mid and late-game fights in Deadlock where turret placement and playing defensively can make all the difference in a game.
Use Medicinal Specter and Spectral Wall to make safe spaces for yourself and your allies.
Mind the positioning of your turrets, as they will often be crucial in holding positions on the map. McGinnis compensates for this with a Heavy Barrage paired with solid defensive setups to maximize damage without yielding positioning. The versatility of this hero makes the character a great pick for players who like to scale into being more powerful over a period of time and use strategy rather than brute force.

Early Game Items

Use the picture to help guide you on the item purchase order.  Focus on getting your vitality items and weapon items first and then focus on the spirit items to help support your turrets later on. Grab Hollow Point Ward and Basic Magazine to boost your weapon’s potential early game. Then buy Sprint Boots and Enduring Spirit to help you move faster and get some extra health.

Mid-Game Items

Start by picking up Slowing Bullets to keep enemies from running away. Intensifying Magazine makes you do more damage the longer you hold down the trigger. Purchase Heroic Aura to give your weapon more fire rate, give yourself extra health, and give you an active ability that increases the fire rate and move speed of yourself and allies nearby. The next three items will substantially make you increase your turret output.  You will get Rapid Recharge, Superior Cooldown, and Echo Shard.  Echo Shard is important because it can instantly refresh your turret charge after using and then activating Echo Shard. Grab Spirit Lifesteal next to give you lifesteal every time your turrets do damage.

End-Game Items

At this point, you might need some defense so you will want to purchase Improved Bullet Armor or Improved Spirit Armor based on the enemy team composition. Then equip Enduring Speed to be able to move faster around the map.  Purchase Escalating Exposure and Boundless Spirit to make your turrets do extreme damage. Leech is amazing for the end-game as well by increasing your lifesteal even further.

Picking up any of the Situational Turret Upgrades on the list in the picture will help as well. You won’t be able to fit them all so grab the ones that you find will help you most. I recommend Mystic Slow, Improved Reach, and Mystic Vulnerability first. Lastly, Spiritual Overflow will give you more spirit lifesteal, fire rate, and cooldown reduction. Soul Rebirth can bring you back to life after dying while at the same time giving you more spirit power for damage and additional cooldown reduction.

Conclusion

McGinnis in Deadlock should focus on survivability, damage, and turret efficiency. Early game, go for vitality- and weapon-item priorities such as Hollow Point Ward and Basic Magazine to scale into your base stats. Move into mid-game with key upgrades such as Slowing Bullets and Intensifying Magazine that will ramp up damage and crowd control while improving turret efficiency with Echo Shard and Rapid Recharge. Later, investments are to be made in defense and Turret upgrades like Boundless Spirit and Leech, and situational items such as Soul Rebirth or Spiritual Overflow can give you the most powerful edge in long battles.
