3 Great Things About Dual Protagonists In Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Dual protagonists should be explored more in video games as they open more storytelling possibilities. Instead of relying on our imaginations, we can blend the main character’s story with another character to give more depth to the story. Thankfully, gaming developers have developed some clever techniques to capitalize off these possibilities to create legendary games.

Moreover, by using dual protagonists, you can market to separate fan bases at the same time. So, you’d need two separate characters to market to each fanbase. What’s even better is that it doesn’t matter if your two main characters are friends or foes, the point is that the dual protagonist gives storytellers even more power to create these iconic stories.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Assassin’s Creed Shadows follows dual protagonists during the Azuchi Momoyama period in the late 16th century. The two people we follow are a ninja named Naoe Fujibayashi and the real-life African samurai, Yasuke. Furthermore, Assassin’s Creed Shadows will display the Portuguese empire at its highest peak so we should expect beautiful scenery throughout the game.

In addition to including dual protagonists, the story will take place somewhere new. After seventeen years of traveling across different countries and even periods, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is finally headed to Japan. Considering all the stealth and murders the game is known for having, Japan is the perfect place to expand the Assassin’s Creed decades-long series.

Dual Protagonists System

What’s most exciting about Assassin’s Creed Shadows is its new dual protagonists system. While previous games offered dual protagonists to play, it was mostly limited to choosing their gender. To separate itself from previous installments, Assasin’s Creed Shadows gives both characters individual personalities and stories. For instance, Shadows separates Naoe’s and Yasuke’s stories since they are involved in separate professions. For instance, if players follow Naoe’s story, they will learn more about the Shinobi. Likewise, following Yasuke’s story will allow players to experience being a samurai.

More About the Dual Protagonists

So, who are these dual protagonists and why should we root for them? The first protagonist, Fujiibayashi Naoe, is a shinobi woman who seeks to avenge her father, Fujibayashi Nagato, who had trained Naoe in martial arts because of the war. Alongside Naoh, the real-life African samurai Yasuke had found himself in Oda Nobunaga’s service after surviving an attack on the slave ship on which he was imprisoned. Even more interesting, both characters, Noae and Yasuke, will be enemies at the beginning of the game before eventually siding with each other as the game progresses.

The Dual Combat Styles of Assassin’s Creed Shadows

In addition to having different stories, both characters will have unique playing styles. By choosing Naoe, players will spend most of her story sneaking into and out of places as Naeo is mostly for stealth. Likewise, if you want to fight like a madman? Yasuke is the guy just based on his physique alone. These playing styles create distinctions between the characters without force. For starters, you can tell that Naoe cares more about stealth from her attire and personality. Alongside her stealth, Naoe is the only one with a hidden blade. In comparison, Yasuke can rely on his side for an advantage as he can fight multiple enemies and break down doors and armor.

The Big Takeaway

If you’ve seen the trailers showing the dual protagonists at work, you’d see there’s much to look forward to in the new Assassin’s Creed Shadows. So, who will you choose to play? The female shinobi, Noae, who seeks vengeance against her family’s murderers, or the African samurai, Yasuke, a former slave who protects his new home as a rampaging samurai? Yes, it’s a tough decision until you release you can play the game back to re-experience it.
