Final Fantasy 16 Lands October 2024 Update

After its release on PC, several concerns were raised about Final Fantasy 16’s performance. PC players are accustomed to a variety of settings, both to maximize a game’s visuals and to control its stability. Square-Enix has often been a console-focused company, with games like 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake being console exclusives for a time before getting ported.

As such, the PC settings can often be below the standard expected from platform enthusiasts. With a patch released this month, Square hopes to address some of these concerns and provide key improvements to the game for those enjoying it on their PCs.

Waiting for PC

Final Fantasy 16 making its way to PC was inevitable and expected. The developers were not shy of acknowledging their need to work around the timed console exclusivity and the need for extra development time to work on PC settings. Thankfully, Creative Studio 3, headed by Naoki Yoshida, has experience with the PC platform from their work on Final Fantasy 14.

Regardless, moving from a title that was built from the ground up for the PlayStation 5 to a new platform always takes work. Following its two DLC packagesFinal Fantasy 16 was finally launched on PC this past summer to fan excitement. However, minor issues did manage to pop up.

Launch Concerns

PC gamers have been pushing graphical boundaries well beyond what console players are used to. As such, there are expectations for games to run in alternative aspect ratios and higher resolutions. Unfortunately, Final Fantasy 16 struggled by having minor bugs with aspect ratios higher than 16:9 among other performance issues.

While graphical settings were added to accommodate various hardware, many players found them insufficient. Powerful rigs were seen to experience issues with heat and lag. Unlike a gaming console, PCs are performing myriad background work besides running a game, and so additional considerations must be made.

Patch Away

Thankfully, long gone are the days of games dropping in a dire state and never seeing improvement. Square has pushed a patch this month to address these issues and help the game succeed on PC. While not the longest patch notes, they ameliorate the issues mentioned.

Higher aspect ratios should result in fewer UI bugs, and stability issues around certain hardware setups have supposedly been fixed. Additional shadow quality settings should help lower-end rigs better achieve reasonable frame rates. All in all, while a minor-seeming patch, it is bringing the game in the correct direction.

Final Thoughts

As Square-Enix reconsiders its console exclusivity contracts for future titles, concerns about same-day PC launches arise. If their delayed PC launches can see these kinds of bugs and performance issues, what about when they have even less time?

Fans worry that Square is simply not ready to produce quality PC ports of their AAA titles. However, the problems faced by console exclusivity need to be resolved for the company’s games to recoup their budget. One must hope that future titles launched on PC on day one will have more testing for various hardware configurations. Final Fantasy 16 will hopefully continue to get support so it becomes the best version of itself.
