Flappy Bird has been recently announced to be coming back. The game was released in early 2013, and developed by video game programmer and artist Dong Nguyen. In early 2014, the game saw a sudden surge in popularity from players. This led to it becoming a highly-played iOS game. The game was discontinued ten years ago, quickly fading into obscurity. Now that it has returned, it has sparked an interesting discussion.

What is ‘Flappy Bird’?

This arcade-style platformer forces you to play Faby, the eponymous ‘flappy bird’. The player is forced to move Faby forward by tapping the touchscreen. You have to move him at the correct pace so that he does not bump into the pipes. Each time you move successfully through a pipe, it grants you one point. If the player hits the pipe or the ground then it will end the game, and you will get a game over. If you manage\ to gain enough points, the game screen will award you a set of medals.

Flappy Bird is an illusion of difficulty; at first glance, it looks easy, but quickly reveals itself to be hard. If you are not too careful, you will collide with either the ground or the pipes. Naturally, the gameplay has infuriated and confused many players due to its navigation. Many viewers felt discouraged by the high difficulty level which became a point against the game.

Initial controversies

In 2014, Flappy Bird was pulled from both the Google app store and the iOS app store. Many critics’ claims of the game being ‘addictive’ soured many people on the title. In addition, Dong Nguyen was dissatisfied with the game’s effect on players. The game was meant to be relaxing, something that you could play for just a few minutes. Flappy Bird was instead played for hours on end, and it became a problem.

Viewers also cited potential legal problems with Nintendo, the owners of the iconic platformer Mario, as an issue. The pipes that were used in the game are quite similar to the pipes used in Mario. The Mario-style art at first glance could be seen as a ripoff, but it was later clarified to be fake. The art style is instead original, even in spite of its assumed similarities. Overall, these issues cemented a deep problem with the game and how it was played.

Flappy Bird’s return and legal rights

2024 has offered a shocking update, as more than 10 years after its cancellation, the game will finally return. The news came recently, and there are already plans for a release at the end of October. In addition, a mobile port will be made the following year. This upcoming reboot is an unofficial title owned by the ‘Flappy Bird Foundation’, who have wrestled the creation free from its original owner.

Earlier this year, the trademark for Flappy Bird was terminated and handed over to the company after Nguyen failed to regain it. Because of this, Dong Nguyen has nothing to do with the new game, and still holds creative rights over the old ones. In addition, the game’s return has sparked a new controversy about cryptocurrency. Flappy Bird will be a cryptocurrency game, and it will fly into Solana, a crypto-based network.

Flappy Bird’s New Future

Flappy Bird tells the story of an interesting game that did not take flight in the way it was meant to. The game was created for relaxation, but it was only used as an unhealthy habit for new gamers. From just in-app advertisements and sales, Flappy Bird and its developer were earning 50,000 a day. More than that, it was the most downloaded game in the iOS app store in January 2014.

Flappy Bird’s return offers a potential chance to balance the game. Many critics pointed out how unfair the game’s mechanics were for players. The touchscreen title could finally earn a fair chance at being played, beyond being an ‘addiction’ for gamers. Flappy Bird has a turbulent future ahead of it. One can only hope that the series avoids stoking the fires of any new controversies ahead.
