In the new Assassin’s Creed game, we follow two main characters: Yasuke and Fujibayashi Naoe. This isn’t the first time that we’ve followed multiple characters in an Assassin’s Creed game; Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate is another example. Usually, each character provides a different backstory and functionality for the players. Let’s talk about one of the characters: Fujibayashi Naoe.
Naoe As A Ninja
In Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Fujibayashi Naoe plays the stealthy ninja role. She is part of the Japanese Brotherhood of Assassins and was trained from a young age at a Ninjustsu school. Shadows takes place in feudal Japan, beginning in the late 1500s. These feuds impacted Naoe as her home, Iga was pillaged and burned down, and the brutal action was assisted by Yasuke, who would soon become her ally.
The trailer shows that Naoe is kind and intensely loyal to her father and people. Besides being a ninja, the trailer shows that she also engages in calmer activities. She and her people are mainly farmers, and Naoe uses her skills only as a ninja to protect Iga. This loyalty to Iga is so fierce that it pushes her to take action when they are attacked. Naoe’s father, Fujibayashi Nagato, was a historical figure in Japan. He was a Shinobi and historically had issues with Oda Nobunaga.
Oda Nobunaga is the Lord who employs Yasuke, the other protagonist in Assassin’s Creed: Shadows. Naoe’s father, based on an actual historical figure, gives her a rich history in connection to the Shinobi. In the trailer, we can see that Naoe and her father have a good relationship, which might play into her story.
Fujibayashi Naoe’s Skills In Shadows
When Assassin’s Creed features two protagonists, each character has different strengths and weaknesses. Naoe’s strength lies in stealth. She is a member of the Brotherhood of Assassins and has ninjutsu training. Her counterpart, Yasuke, is a Samurai who exhibits more brute strength than anything else.
Fujibayashi Naoe is prolific in parkour, a classic Assassin’s Creed feature. She carries smoke bombs, grappling hooks, and light armor that assists in her stealth and helps her remain undetected. Her weapons are also light, assisting in agility. She carries a katana, shuriken, and kunai. Her attacks are more focused on speed, but they are still extremely powerful.
Final Thoughts
From everything we’ve seen in the game, Naoe seems to be a well-rounded and interesting character. It’s possible that while you may be able to switch between Naoe and Yasuke, certain missions will be exclusive to her. Getting to know her better will be fun when Assassin’s Creed: Shadows releases on November 12th, 2024. The game is set to be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, and Mac OS.
