The mostly silent protagonist of the Ys series is the red-haired adventurer, Adol Christin. He’s a staple of the series, appearing in all of the games – even as an unlockable character in Ys Origin‘s non-canon Arena Mode. His adventures have taken him all over the fictional world the games take place in. With Ys 10: Nordics coming to the West next month, let’s take a look at who Adol is as a character.

One of Adol Christin’s most defining character traits is his unfailing kindness. No matter where he goes, if someone is in need he’ll jump into action. Whether it’s as simple as stepping in when someone is dealing with a bully, or as complex as when he’s tasked with saving the world, Adol has always faced any obstacle head-on when it means he’s helping someone.
Adol is also a very skilled swordsman, capable of taking down monsters and gods alike. It’s with good reason that one of his many monikers is “the red-haired swordsman”. The more modern Ys games see Adol learning new skills to augment his existing combat prowess. In the entries that take place later in the series’ timeline, Adol has a reputation as either an impressively skilled swordsman or a persistent nuisance.
The Eager Adventurer
Another of Adol Christin’s key traits is his relentless optimism. No matter how bleak the circumstances, Adol will refuse to give up. This optimism tends to be infectious. In particularly hopeless times, the people around Adol will turn to him for encouragement and hope. Adol also has a deep love of adventuring. He left home at only 16 years old to explore the world, and since the beginning of the series it’s been said that he continues exploring right up until his death. Several of his adventures have seen him hand-drawing maps of the places he explores, and each adventure he goes on is recorded in one of the hundreds of travelogues kept in his childhood home.
The Reckless Hero
Adol’s eagerness to explore and to help others often puts himself in danger. The series has a long-running joke at Adol’s expense, about how many of his adventures begin with a shipwreck. His first adventure of the series takes place when he is only 17 years old, and the backstory in that game’s manual shows an Adol Christin who knowingly goes to an island country said to be cursed and impossible to return from.

Adol Christin is one of many beloved characters from JRPG developer Nihon Falcom. With Nordics set to take place between Ancient Ys Vanished and Memories of Celceta, that means Adol will be around 17 or 18 years old in Nordics. How might Adol’s personality look during that timeframe?
