Metaphor ReFantazio Sets Records with 2024 Release

Metaphor ReFantazio is Atlus’ new child. Atlus, the developers of the hit Persona series brought forth a new game that took the community by storm, hitting new records and setting new highs for the company. It sold 1 million copies on its first day, beating Persona 3 Reloaded with its 1 million sold in the first week and setting a new record at Atlus. With how the game plays and looks there is no surprise it became the talk of the gaming world, lets dive a bit and see why.

Metaphor ReFantazio’s Story

Metaphor ReFantazio takes plays in the United Kindom of Euchronia, a medieval fantasy world. The protagonist, Will, an orphaned boy of the magic-weilding Elda tribe participates in the Royal Tournament to decide the throne’s successor. As the Protagonist and the Prince’s close friend, you will journey across Euchorina to rally support from its people while searching for a way to lift the Prince’s curse with the help of a small fary called Gallica.

Without spoiling anything, you travel across the land to gather friends whom you can romance and interact with over the time of the journey as you gather clues on the “human” enemies. Why they want to make the kingdom fall is unknown but from a glance at the “humans,” it looks like artwork, as Hieronymus Bosch, a medieval painter, inspired their design. Atlus shows its inspirations well, showing that it still takes from its own games

Looking at Metaphor ReFantazio it’s clear to see it was made by Atlus and was clearly inspired by their Persona series. Giving a more realistic look it puts a twist on the usual design for Persona. The characters are unusual, and take more of a fantasy style than the usual mythos they use to shape their Demons, Angels, and Gods in their Persona series. While it is new to me, I can’t say it’s unwelcome as it gives their characters a unique view and taste.

But that’s not the only thing that gets a shake-up and change. The battle UI gets a new look as it freshens up its style giving it a unique yet familiar look. The new Archetypes also give a fresh style to their games, Metaphor ReFantazio, it kinda replaces the Persona system in their Persona series giving you a more natural RPG feeling. You pick a class and as you level up the bond with your friends you get access to subclasses that can redefine the class it supports. It gives a Fire Emblem vibe with how you level up the class with the bonds and progress to the next stage.

Instead of the normal dungeon crawling aspects Persona is known for off the back it continues the trend of Persona 5‘s sandbox exploration in Mementos. Seeing the game firsthand it’s not hard to see why people went crazy over it, Atlus released a demo before its release that got everyone excited for it to its release date. Metaphor ReFantazio was not afraid to change things up and it clearly makes that game better.
