Project Justice And Plasma Sword: Capcom’s Underrated 3D Fighters

Project Justice and Plasma Sword have been announced for the Capcom Fighting Collection II. These two underrated 3D fighting games are finally getting representation in the modern era. Both games were initially arcade fighters that made their way into the Sega Dreamcast. After years of being unavailable, these games join Capcom’s second fighting collection in 2025. This is an opportunity for these two fighting games to strike a chord with new gamers.

What is ‘Project Justice’?

Project Justice is a 3D fighting game released on the arcade in 2000. It is a sequel to the infamous Rival Schools series, with its full title being Project Justice: Rival Schools 2. Project Justice’s story places it one year after the first game, where everything is at peace. However, a new faction known as the ‘Reverse Society’ threatens that peace and forces the heroes back into the fight. Led by the ruthless assassin Kurow Kirishima, the Reverse Society desires complete control over Japan. Batsu and his friends must fight through the Reverse Society to restore the peace.

The gameplay offers a few advantages from its predecessor, Rival Schools. Instead of choosing two characters, you can choose up to three. This gives you another team-up attack at your disposal, but lets you use a special attack; the Party-Up. The Party-Up attack has a lot of variety, based on which school the main character initiating it is from. The game still retains the vigor meter, but it has a limit. It still lets you perform team-up attacks and super moves, but it can only go up to five instead of nine. Overall, Project Justice’s upgrades still contain the fun that Rival Schools’ gameplay offers, but with a few touch-ups, you can adjust to it.

What is ‘Plasma Sword’?

Plasma Sword, also known as ‘Plasma Sword: Nightmare of Bilstein’, is another arcade fighter that was released in 1998. The story takes place a year after Star Gladiator, where Hayato Kanzaki fought against the Fourth Empire. In the prior game, the Fourth Empire fell, and their leader, Bilstein was ultimately vanished by Hayato. Plasma Swords sees Dr. Bilstein make a return, not only in a new cyborg body but also with the addition of his old body as a ‘ghost’. The Fourth Empire still poses a threat, and they are actively planning for Bilstein’s dream of universal domination. Hayato and the Star Gladiators wage a new war to destroy Bilstein’s forces, ending the war.

The game is a sequel to the weapon-based Star Gladiator, which was Capcom’s first polygonal fighting game that was developed in-house. This was Capcom’s first attempt at making a 3D fighting game, and while it did not influence the genre, it gained a sequel. Plasma Sword makes a drastic change to the prior game’s system, disposing of one of its gimmicks. Star Gladiator had the Plasma Combo System, which allowed you to combo an enemy through specific strikes even while they were blocking. Plasma Sword focused on the Plasma Strike system, a street fighter-esque combo system that gave you a gauge to charge special moves.

A potential resurgence in popularity

Project Justice and Plasma Sword are two underrated fighters within Capcom’s circle. The games were both on the Arcade and then initially ported over to Dreamcast. Their inclusion in the Capcom Fighting Collection has offered them a second chance at popularity.

More than that, it has also helped preserve the game on modern consoles.  The games are old, but their charm and style shine through. Despite their flaws, they look genuinely fun and offer a lot of entertainment. Overall, if you are a fan of Capcom’s fascinating 3D era, you should check it out.
