Remedy and Annapurna Partnered For Control And Alan Wake

Remedy's Alan Wake

Remedy Entertainment and Annapurna’s partnership is officially in the works. Remedy announced the team-up on their website earlier today. The two gaming and entertainment leaders say they’ll work together to develop film and television expansions for both Control and Alan Wake series. Annapurna will also provide production and financing support for Control 2, with Remedy retaining full creative control over both of its flagship franchises.

Expanding into Other Mediums

Hector Sanchez, one of Annapurna’s founders, returned to the company as President of Interactive and New Media just a week before the partnership reveal. He elaborated on the motivation behind the union, saying “This deal with Remedy isn’t just about adapting great games-it’s about breaking new ground in how companies can collaborate. By backing the studio toward self-publishing, we’re putting our faith in their vision.”

Annapurna founder and CEO Megan Ellison pointed toward the strategic expansion of gaming franchises into non-interactive media as a forward-thinking business strategy. She added, “The way we tell stories is changing. Today people fall in love with characters and universes, not formats. We’re excited to assist Remedy’s immersive narratives in these new mediums.”

The studio’s official press release also indicated expansion into other yet-to-be-identified audiovisual formats. What these productions might look like was not identified in the press release, nor in the production schedule. Any film or TV effort could take the form of a remake of the existing stories, expansions or continuations of the worlds and stories, or companions to the games themselves. There’s also the possibility of hybridized interactive television, with Remedy having toyed with similar approaches in their 2016 Quantum Break, and Annapurna being a major player in traditional media production.

The partnership comes on the heels of Remedy’s confirmation of a Control sequel, and their acquisition of full rights to the franchise from their previous developing partner 505 Games. In their announcement, the studio’s Communications Director Thomas Puha highlighted that the company will remain “an independent studio with full creative ownership of two of [their] most beloved franchises.” Remedy still plans to self-publish the long-awaited Control sequel, whose future seems all the more secure with a funding commitment from Annapurna.

Video Game Adaptation Trend Continues

Expanding two very popular and critically lauded IPs into film and TV is a smart move on paper. A recent string of successful video game adaptations like The Last of Us, Arcane, and Fallout have given credence to the move from a business perspective. In their wake, other studios have unveiled plans to bring their games into graphic novels and other expanded media as a low-overhead way to enhance world-building and expand backstories.

While the recent Borderlands film debacle may have cooled enthusiasm for bigger budgeted adaptations, Annapurna and Remedy have excellent track records of maintaining technical excellence without sacrificing creative quality. It seems unlikely that the two studios would fail to successfully translate the Control and Alan Wake franchises into quality productions across other media.
