Assassin’s Creed has had some great games over the years ever since the franchise’s debut in 2007. The biggest turning point and the innovation in the series happened with the launch of Origins in 2017. This game was a massive change in how the core gameplay of these games worked. This later on paved the way for other games like Odyssey and Valhalla. The franchise was in desperate need of innovation, so Ubisoft took the year 2016 off and moved away from the annual releases. Ubisoft then released Origins in 2017, which felt like a complete reboot of the franchise. There was a new progression system, the game had a massive visual upgrade. Skill trees were also added and it was a breath of fresh air. The setting of Origins was also something that fans have been requesting for a long time. This game was successful at launch, had some great reviews, and became the highest third-selling game in the series.
Story & Setting
Assassin’s Creed Origins takes place in Ancient Egypt and follows the story of Bayek. A father who is on a path of revenge to kill the murderers of his son. The game tells the story of how the Assassin order or The Hidden Ones came to be. Origins does an excellent job of portraying the era of Ancient Egypt while keeping true to the storyline that started in the original game. The visuals of the game are stunning and hold well for being a 6-year-old game.
The environment and the atmosphere of Egypt are amazing. The detail and effort put into the design of the world design is breathtaking and is a joy to explore. The cities manage to look alive and vibrant. The character of Bayek is phenomenal and mirrors that of the beloved Ezio from Assassin’s Creed 2. His character perfectly shows the balance of being a ruthless assassin while also being kind and caring around his friends, wife, and children.
RPG Gameplay
Assassin’s Creed Origins brought in new RPG features to the classic formula of the franchise. A skill tree was added to help improve the player’s stealth and assassination methods. There was a progression system added with enemies and areas being scaled according to that system. There were not much of buildcrafting options but the skill tree provided player options to choose their playstyle. There were different categories and rarity of weapons. The parkour system remained mostly the same and an argument can be made that it was a bit toned down. Other than that, Assassin’s Creed Origins remains the perfect example of how to innovate a franchise while being true to its core.
