Sam Mowry, the voice actor of Rhaast from League of Legends as well as many other video games unfortunately passed away at the age of 64. His career as an actor included not just voice-overs but also live-action work both on the big and small screen. Sam Mowry was also a proficient stage actor and his roles included King Lear from King Lear and The Lady’s Not For Burning.
Riot Pays Its Respect to Sam Mowry
Riot Games, the developers of League of Legends paid their respects to Mowry in a post via X/Twitter which said, “We’re sad to learn that Sam Mowry, the voice of Rhaast, passed away this weekend.” Riot Games also said “thank you Sam” in a follow-up reply to their first post. Mowry provided the voice for the character Rhaast who is one of the Darkin from League of Legends. The late actor also voiced Rhaast in Legends of Runeterra which is a collectible card game, set in the League of Legends universe.
Mowry’s wife, Cindy McGean confirmed his passing via a post on his FaceBook profile on July 20th which said “This is Cindy posting on Sam’s page, As many of you know, Sam died this morning. His big, beautiful heart gave out. I am so moved and grateful for the many and varied memories folks are posting, and the pictures and videos.” In an obituary, Oregon Arts Watch also confirmed his passing which was via cardiac arrest.
His Roles In Games
The late Sam Mowry was a talented voice actor who besides providing his voice for League of Legends and Legends of Runeterra also provided his voice for Kessler from the PlayStation Three exclusive Infamous, Anti-Mage and others from Defense of the Ancients Two or Dota Two for short, and Kavatos Stromeye for the MMO Neverwinter. He also provided voice work for the now shutdown Magic: Legends which was an aRPG MMO set in Wizards of the Coast’s Magic: The Gathering universe. His other roles include Arpeggio in Sly 2: Band of Thieves and Alexander from the horror game Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
Mowry’s Other Acting Roles
Mowry’s live- action work include Arthur Glantz from an episode of Under Suspicion, Storkel in the film Without Evidence, Detective Coleman and Mr. Simmons in the TV show Nowhere Man, and Judge Czarneki in the TV film Final Justice. Mowry was also an experienced stage actor playing such roles as the titular King Lear in King Lear, Orson Welles in Christmas From Home, and Lucifer in The Creation.
Mowry founded The Willamette Radio Workshop in 2001 which specialized in making radio dramas in which he served as an artistic director and actor. His son Atticus Mowry also works as an actor for The Willamette Radio Workshop. For the Holidays of 2022, The Willamette Radio Workshop performed a radio version of Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol titled, A Radio Christmas Carol. It’s always sad when someone passes and doubly so if that person was a kind-hearted and gentle giant that Sam Mowry seemed to be. He is survived by his wife Cindy McGean as well as his son, Atticus.
