Spider-Man 2 has been out for over a year now, and it has re-emerged in many headlines. Not for the best reasons, unfortunately. Spider-Man 2 was meant to have some post-launch DLC that unfortunately never came out. Very recently, Spider-Man 2 on the PlayStation 5 just received a new update. Fans were surprised to see this, and even more surprised to see what the contents of this shadow drop were.
Spider-Man 2’s Update 1.004
Fans should temper expectations since the content of this update was not DLC-related. The new update, titled Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Version 1.004, made its way onto fans’ PlayStation 5 consoles earlier this week. The main target of this update was the graphical options. Two brand-new modes were introduced in this update. Performance Pro is a new graphical mode that aims to target 60 frames per second and has the same amount of graphical detail as the base game’s fidelity mode.
Fidelity mode from the game’s launch was a mode that targeted 30 frames but had enhanced lighting, raytracing, and other features in that same vein. The second mode introduced is Fidelity Pro. This mode targets 30 frames per second but has insane graphical detail and fidelity. More pedestrians, more traffic, higher hair quality, new lighting and raytracing features, the whole nine yards. These new modes were introduced into this game via update in preparation for the release of the brand-new PlayStation 5 Pro, coming out on November 7th.
Graphical Updates
These Insomniac Spider-Man games have always had a huge emphasis on graphical quality and fidelity. It may seem a bit counter-intuitive, because this game is a fast-paced action game, and 60 frames per second is darn near essential to something like that. Pretty graphics definitely add to the experience though, and many gamers appreciate the higher quality of graphics. This brings up a greater point about the post-launch support of this game. The original Spider-Man game released on PS4 in 2018 had a ton of post-launch DLC and support.
There were three different story expansions released in the first three months of the game’s release. There were also tons and tons of cosmetic suits added to the game in the many years after the release. Many of these suits were incredibly sought after by the community, like the Webbed suit from the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies, and the Amazing suit from the Marc Webb Spider-Man movies. On top of these, there were tons of original, and classic comic suits added to the game, like the Future Foundation and Bombastic Bag Man suits.
Spider-Man 2’s Three Canceled DLC Episodes
This is public knowledge now due to a myriad of leaks, an unfortunate hack on Insomniac Games, and rumors, but the game had DLC that was planned to be released but was canceled. This situation is very odd since Insomniac has never officially announced DLC for Spider-Man 2, but they did recently speak out in the past week that there is no DLC planned for the game. Many fans were disappointed by this since this series of Spider-Man games is incredibly beloved by fans and reviewers alike.
As for the DLC? Dataminers have found that there were three different episodes planned for Insomniac’s latest. The first one had to do with the Beetle, or Janice Lincoln, daughter of Tombstone, who is now in this universe, a reformed villain. The second one had to do with Carnage, a character who was heavily teased in Spider-Man 2’s side quests. The final one was a tie-in to the Spider-Verse movies. All three of these episodes would have had new boss fights, and story missions just like the first game’s DLC. It is a true shame that these episodes will never come to fruition. Fans can only hope that future Spider-Man games after Spider-Man 2 will have more support.
