Each Nintendo console usually carries a few games from flagship franchises, and the Nintendo Switch and The Legend of Zelda are not exempt from this. Each console throughout the game company’s impressive history has had playable versions of at least one Zelda game, dating back to the NES and continuing through with the Switch.
We can only speculate on how the Switch 2, or whatever is it ultimately called (Super Nintendo Switch makes sense), might handle this franchise and its iconic games. In the meantime, it’s becoming more apparent every day that the current console is the ultimate Zelda machine.
The Nintendo Switch Loves The Legend of Zelda
Few franchises, perhaps only Super Mario, can rival The Legend of Zelda, and Nintendo knows that well. That’s why the current console is so full of the franchise’s titles. With one more on the way this month, there are 21 mainline games. Most of them are playable on the Switch. Here’s how:
- The Legend of Zelda (1986) – NES Switch Online
- Zelda II: The Adventure of Link – NES Switch Online
- A Link to the Past – SNES Switch Online
- The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening – GameBoy Switch Online (Expansion Pack), 2019 Switch Remake
- Ocarina of Time – N64 Switch Online (Expansion Pack)
- The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask – N64 Switch Online (Expansion Pack)
- The Minish Cap – GameBoy Switch Online (Expansion Pack)
- The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages – GameBoy Switch Online (Expansion Pack)
- Oracle of Seasons – GameBoy Switch Online (Expansion Pack)
- The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword – 2021 Nintendo Switch Remake
- Breath of the Wild – Switch Release in 2017
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – 2023 Switch Release
- Echoes of Wisdom – September 26 Release on Nintendo Switch
With the Switch 2 on the way, it’s unclear what the future holds for the current Nintendo online service. As it stands, there are 13 of the 21 games (roughly 62% of the entire library) on the Switch.
More Possibilities for Switch Zelda
The Legend of Zelda could theoretically get more games for the Nintendo Switch. Rumors abounded that Twilight Princess and Wind Waker could get ported before Echoes of Wisdom was announced. That could still happen. It may also happen with Switch Online if a GameCube extension comes to Switch Online. Both games were on that platform.
While it’s impossible to predict when the next Zelda game will be following Echoes of Wisdom, it’s not totally out of the realm of possibility that it comes out with the launch of the Switch 2. If it does, then, just like Breath of the Wild in 2017, it could very well come on both consoles. BOTW came out for the Switch but was also put on the Wii U. If a new Zelda game is done before the current console is rendered obsolete, it might be a dual-platform game.
In Conclusion
There’s never been a better time to be a Zelda fan. New games are coming and are winning awards and developing devoted player bases. But those who miss the old days, for the most part, are far from left out. There is so much content ready on one console and that likely won’t change soon.
