Those new players might have some questions about the title before or during their playthroughs Some might involve where Fallout 4 takes place in the United States or what the impacts of the Great War were on its specific region. This article aims to answer those questions as well as give some extra insight into the locations in the game that actually exist in real life.

The story of the game takes place in a region of the US known as the Commonwealth. It’s the post-apocalyptic version of Massachusetts. It’s the first Fallout game to be based in the New England area. The closest one is Fallout 3, which takes place in the Capital Wasteland. It consists of the remains of Washington, D.C. as well as the surrounding areas in Maryland and Virginia.

The main portion of the story is set in the year 2287, six years after the game before it, Fallout: New Vegas. However, players do get a brief glimpse of 2077 thanks to the first sequence of the game. In the short beginning sequence, the player character lives in pre-war times until the atomic bombs fall, which makes the character, their spouse, and their infant son escape to Vault 111. This happens on October 23, 2077, both the beginning and end of the Great War.

The Great War and the Commonwealth

The Great War had a truly devastating impact around the globe, destroying and irradiating everything the eye could see thanks to the dropping of untold amounts of atomic bombs. The impact of this event carries over to the present day in the world of Fallout. Just how much of that initial impact did the Commonwealth see directly? How badly did the area where Fallout 4 takes place end up?

A total of three nuclear bombs were dropped on Boston on that tragic day in 2077. Compared to the area around Las Vegas, which later became New Vegas, it wasn’t that many. That area at at least 77 bombs that bombarded it. The Washington, DC area was hit even harder with 96 bombs that targeted that area. However, this does not mean that the Boston area suffered any less.

One of the three bombs that fell upon the region was responsible for creating the Glowing Sea, the most irradiated known area in the entire Fallout franchise. It’s also one of the most dangerous areas in Fallout 4. While it’s not an actual sea, it was once a set of densely populated communities southwest of Boston proper.  Now, it is only home to mutated creatures and a group of people who worship atomic bombs as some sort of deity. They live in the crater the bomb left behind, which is known as the Crater of Atom. Of course, there are other areas in the Commonwealth that are greatly irradiated, but none of them hold a light to the Glowing Sea.

Fallout 4 Locations in the Real World

Unlike with the Crater of Atom, there are actually real locations featured in the game that can be visited in real life. While the versions of those places in the game are much closer together and in disrepair, it’s still a nice touch to see them in the world of Fallout. One of the most prominent locations players can visit in the game is called Diamond City. Those who step into it will quickly find that the people there have a strong culture surrounding baseball. This is because the city was actually built in the famous Fenway Park.

There are many other recognizable sites dotted across the map of the Commonwealth. Players can explore the less-kept versions of the Boston Public Library, the Bunker Hill Monument, Walden Pond, and many more. Players can even set foot on the historic USS Constitution for a quirky quest. These locations along with the incredible world-building the series offers make the area where Fallout 4 takes place feel more real and immersive to the ones exploring the Commonwealth.

Blending real-world locations into the story is a constant throughout the Fallout franchise. Even Amazon Prime’s live-action adaptation also does this by showing off a destroyed version of the Santa Monica Pier, Griffith Observatory, and the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. This consistent blending of real life and fiction is just one of the many reasons why people around the world continue to “Crawl Out Through the Fallout.”
