As we approach the launch of the next World of Warcraft expansion, Blizzard’s media blitz is accelerating. The War Within launches a trilogy of stories entitled The Worldsoul Saga. As we head to new places and meet new characters, we can’t forget about legacy. Returning NPCs are essential to our journey and to help us stop the threat of Xal’atath, the returning big baddie. One of our most reliable friends, Khadgar, seems to have a looming shadow of danger over him. What is bound to happen to him in the coming WoW expansion?
Teasing an Epic Battle
In a new short tease of an in-game cutscene, Xal’atath arrives in the city of Dalaran. Khadgar, leader of the Kirin Tor and the city’s greatest protector confronts her. She admonishes him, believing he has failed to make proper use of Dalaran’s power. Khadgar insists that she will not take control of it, and unleashes a massive blast of magical energy at her. Xal’atath, however, emerges unscathed. The clip cuts off here, but the suggestion is clear: Khadgar is outmatched. Xal’atath is the main antagonist being presented to us, the Harbinger of the Void. Her power is meant to give us pause, and clearly, Khadgar feels that fear, too.
Who is Khadgar?
Before we proceed further, let’s talk about Khadgar. He is a wielder of the Arcane, the most orderly and studious magical discipline available to players. At a young age, he studied under Medivh, the former Guardian of Tirisfal. While Medivh fell to corruption, Khadgar remained true. However, his attempt to stop his master from working with the invading Orcs from another world left him scarred and aged. Though he regained his strength and magic, he looked dramatically older. In the following years, he worked closely with the Alliance to protect the world from foreign invaders. He even worked with Thrall’s New Horde towards the same end.
A Constant Companion
Khadgar has journeyed alongside WoW’s players for some time. He is a frequent quest-giver for players of both factions. During The Burning Crusade, he stayed in Outland to help coordinate efforts against the Burning Legion. In Warlords of Draenor, he leads the charge to Alternate Draenor to fight the Iron Horde. In Legion, as leader of the Kirin Tor, he let us use Dalaran as a mobile base of operations against another invasion of the Burning Legion. Time and time again, when Azeroth faces threats, Khadgar is the first to seek solutions. Likely the most powerful Mage on Azeroth, he has saved us time and again with a portal and a quip.
Future Ruin
Be forewarned, I will go into minor spoilers revealed by the developers about the opening of The War Within. We have been told we will wage a battle at Dalaran, but not one we necessarily win. It would appear that the flying city will be brought to the ground. Such a massive drop spells devastation for its inhabitants, which presents worry for Khadgar and others. From what we’ve heard, Khadgar is not present with our other allies as we venture underground. It remains possible that Khadgar has been taken captive or worse. While his death would be shocking, it would prove a powerful way to open The Worldsoul Saga.
What Losing Khadgar Means
Khadgar is unique among Warcraft characters. He has long been one of the few humans who the Alliance and Horde both trust. He has guided players through quests in many an expansion. His lore dates back to the original RTS games. Cursed to artificially age, he takes the role of a seeming elder for the players. We look to him not just for strength but for wisdom and guidance. As one of the characters most interested in doing good in Warcraft, his loss would devastate many others in-game. His friends like Jaina, Anduin, and Thrall will likely be lost without his guidance. It remains to be seen if we can rescue him from a terrible fate.
Final Thoughts
World of Warcraft has come under fire in the past few years for bad storytelling and Blizzard’s internal drama. The Dragonflight expansion was seen as a return to form but also as a rather light story. Some critique exists over cutscenes seemingly being too family-friendly and lacking the darker tone of earlier stories. However, the new era of WoW storytelling is beginning and seems poised to be darker than before. Does this mean a major character death is imminent? We’ll soon see when The War Within launches on August 26th.
