Why We Need Super Mario Galaxy 3

Super Mario Galaxy launch

In 2007, Nintendo released one of the most critically acclaimed entries in their flagship franchise, Super Mario Galaxy. The game was praised for its stellar presentation, out-of-this-world platforming, and surprisingly heartfelt story. The game also introduced one of the most unexpectedly popular characters in the franchise: Rosalina. However, the last entry in the series was 2010’s Super Mario Galaxy 2. Since then, the game has yet to receive proper continuation, even though it is one of Nintendo’s best games. To many fans, this series is due for a third game. Here is a breakdown of why Mario fans are in line for a third Galaxy game.

The Mario Fandom is Thriving

Nintendo needs to release Super Mario Galaxy 3 because Mario’s fandom is currently thriving. To many gamers, this news may sound obvious, as the Super Mario Bros franchise is already the most iconic in gaming and has been for a long time. However, the NY plumber has again proven his ability to rise to the spotlight. The recent animated film from Illumination was a surprise critical and commercial success; Wonder was another successful entry in the video game series.

Furthermore, there has also been renewed interest in Mario’s old platforming days. Three years ago, Nintendo released the “3D All-Stars” Collection, which brought Galaxy, 64, and Sunshine to the Nintendo Switch. While the game itself was a best-seller, it was only a limited release from Nintendo. Even with the game’s temporary time to shine, it did a good job of reminding players of Mario’s old games. As such, many Mario fans are dying to see a third entry in the Galaxy series. Much like the long-awaited Metroid Prime 4, this game could be a godsend to Nintendo’s goodwill with fans.

Nintendo’s New Tech Could Do It

It’s no small secret that Nintendo’s successor to their current hit console, the Switch, will be unveiled soon. Because of this, the company will need an especially good title to show what it is capable of. Fortunately, Galaxy would be the perfect choice. When the first game was released, it became one of the most revered games in the Wii’s history, a title it shares with its sequel. Given the reputation of both the console and this series, releasing a third Galaxy game could be the launch title needed to get the Switch 2 off the ground.

In the human mind, few concepts have managed to capture our imaginations as well as space, the final frontier. The original games combined the wonder of space with the quirky nature of the Mario series. With a decade and several generations of consoles having passed, bringing the universe of Galaxy to another generation could create one of the most visually stunning games ever created. It’s an opportunity Nintendo shouldn’t pass on.

Super Mario Galaxy 3 Could Revolutionize the Series

Finally, a Super Mario Galaxy franchise reboot could take the series in an entirely new direction. When the first Galaxy was released, it was a groundbreaking platformer that showed what a game could do with gravity. Miyamoto and his team spared no expense in making the game’s physics engine precise, responsive, and impactful in a way few other 3D platformers have ever achieved. For this reason, Galaxy remains one of the most cherished games of the series.

Despite this, the game’s 2010 sequel was seen as a disappointment to many. While the sequel didn’t take anything away from the original, it added little else besides series icon Yoshi. What makes a proper sequel is not just bringing back what worked for the original but building upon it. With everything Nintendo has learned, a new Galaxy game could become one of the highlights of the Mario franchise.

As a sequel, the game could build upon the gameplay and continue the saga. As stated above, the game gave players fan-favorite characters such as Smash Bros-star Rosalina and the Lumas; her adorable servants. As Rosalina hasn’t had a proper appearance in a long time, fans would undoubtedly be glad for their return in a new story. Overall, Galaxy 3 has all of the pieces to become one of the best in the company’s history.
